I think the idea was that Feddie mobile suits were produced en masse for sheer strength of numbers. Why build one great MS when you could make 5 decent ones? GMs are like the TIE fighters of MSG. At least that has always been the impression I got from the shows.

That's wrong though, the Feddies don't have to drop quality to get quantity they have superior resources and manufacturing to all other factions in the Universal Century. Fact is they need a way to build up the enemies as some possible threat without losing any of the named cast, enter the nameless fodder that just exist to die like its their job.

Like for christ's sake the League Militaire were mass producing Gundams on a OYW scale, the federation does not have superior manufacturing to ALL the other factions. And let's not forget that in F91 the Crossbone Vanguard basically surpassed federation tech in every way possible, inventing beam shields and EM lances and crap, and they were able to mass produce this tech. the F91 and Vigna Ghina's power levels were basically even, too.

They had direct backing by Anaheim Electronics, almost to the point where they were it's military rather than an offshoot of the Federation. Whatever the Feddies couldn't buy was just forked over to the LM since it technically wasn't a loss of inventory. And it's justified as AE didn't want the Zanscares taking over the Federation and pushing them out of business with BESPA's superior suits.

Different priorities post-UC 0100, after all 0079-0096 was basically constant warfare so when they had some relative peace they shifted resources and manufacturing to rebuilding. Maintaining and equipping a standing army was lower on their priorities.

The Guncannon DT is actually a Karaba commissioned MS, and only two were ever made as far as the MSV profile goes, one was wrecked during the landing and the other was recovered for use.

GMs are the best MP MS of the OYW in MSG. They don't have as powerful beam weaponry as the Gelgoog but it's virtually just as good and GMs have better mobility stats (the Gelgoog is actually pretty mediocre in acceleration). Not to mention there were many spin-off GMs that were produced in somewhat decent numbers, whereas high end Zeon MS were made in handfuls and deployed basically nowhere.
