Basically. Since so many ultra shows are showing up officially, there is very little incentive for fansubbers to sub new shows. And because it's available cheeply/freely, less people are using torrents.

I watched a chunk of Return and while the arc where they were basically trying to avoid nuking Japan again (the bootleg subs referred to it as a "super lazer" or something) was fucking amazing, the rest didn't really grab me to the extent that the original series did.

From what I've seen, I think Leo was good in terms of story; and yes I know some people will take issue with this given the weird character shift for Seven and whatnot but whatever, it grabbed me narratively.

But I really, REALLY like the first show in terms of monster ideas and just general creative weirdness. It felt like such an "anything goes" show with some episodes being campy goofiness, others being dead serious, others being a strange mix. It's just so full of super inventive iconic shit and was not really about story or characters but about "what crazy shit can we come up with this episode?"

Seven is also great and deserves its massive popularity.

I'm having unhappy flashbacks to All Monsters Attack.

I'm currently watching Orb's first season and not enjoying it too much. I loved the first batch of kaijus but everything after certain episode became a rehased dinosaur-looking monster that can barely move...except the red one that caused a lot of trouble, that was very cool.

However my main gripe is the story: a lot of it is either unexplained (cards), makes no sense (the forest ghost lady) or is too cliched (light vs dark).

I checked some forums and Ultraman Nexus SEEMS to have a more mature atmosphere...but I have to ask two main things:
1. Are the fights too repetitive? It gets very tedious to me how in Orb he goes through the same transformations over and over
2. Does it actually have a coherent story? I'm not asking for something deep or complex, but simple and engaging would be nice.

I would say the show really turns around for a lot of people around episode 14. Personally, I loved the show beforehand and was eagerly anticipating each new episode week to week. The light vs dark thing was particularly interesting because Ultraman as the warrior of light is such a fundamental part of the franchise that something subverting it is interesting to watch.

Nexus is definitely more mature and the story line is pretty concise and cohesive. It does meander a bit in the early teens for a good 4-5 episodes. That portion of the show is an absolute slog, but it's an outlier. The rest of the series is a fantastic watch that (again) gives you a unique take on this supposedly infallible being.

The show was cancelled so the final arc is completely shoved into the last episode. Luckily, that's the only part of the show that suffers from "oh shit we gotta end this now" as a major arc had just come to a close.

Most likely Tsuburaya is trying to do what Amazon Japan is doing, making shows with a larger scale of funding and put it on streaming sites.
Bonobo mainly focus on overseas imports, and add subs for shows for immigrants living in Japan. I guess same deal with Amazon Japan with their Ultraman Orb program.
