Mainland China is going through this economic boom where the rice farmers are finally getting enough money and freedom to have spare time. They want to spend it on typical pastimes like watching movies but they haven't yet had the chance to develop taste so they throw themselves in front of the flashiest thing they can get, hence Transformers. They aren't limited to Michael Bay films either, Pacific Rim was considered a sales flop until it released in China and they bought it up even more than the Americans. It's getting to the point where movies are being released specifically to pander to china foremost and everyone else is an afterthought.
