Why is Fantasy Mecha so under appreciated?
I don't like magic in my science
>>15206253
Because there's like like maybe 5 series that bother to combine them
>>15206253
I didn't even know this was a thing. What is this?
I'm interested in some magic powered mecha as long as it follows consistent rules
>>15206302
The anime in that post is called "Vision of Escaflowne", it's kinda cheesy but still pretty good although some stuff was left unanswered due to budget reasons. But still good start for fantasy mecha.
BTW, none of these shows even establishes consistent rules
Hyped for Knights and Magic
Cause it gives realismfags heart attacks and breaks their immersion.
But goddamn when its done right and not hentai its epic.
>>15206302
It's a thing but it's not hugely common. Mecha tends to stick more to the sci fi side of speculative fiction
Escaflowne and Rayearth are decent starts (though mecha only show up proper towards the end of S1 show up a bunch in S2 though) and it's a spoiler but eh fuck it, Scrapped Princess is a decent show but that's more Clarke's Law than outright magic
>>15206325
I stared Rayearth but seeing how short the manga is I might put the show on hold and read that first but I heard they changed and added alot to the anime. Are there still mechs in the manga or is that a anime original?

>>15206322
I can't think of any that are hentai which means there's some fantasy mecha series I haven't watched yet. What were you thinking of?
>>15206290
Man, that show scratched like a dozen itches at once. I wish there was something else like it. The closest I've found was The Third, which was cool but not quite there.
I've always found Dunbine to be a very interesting series because the series is basically about an escalating technological arms race that ensues when a traditional medieval fantasy setting is given airships and mecha in increasingly large numbers, and the battlefield rapidly modernises as a result.
>>15206424
All of the best Dunbine art is about fighting giant monsters when there's only like three monster fights in the series and two of them are wrestling with a big goofy-looking bird.
>not a single word about Galient
>probably nobody ever heard of Genmu Senki Leda
But I agree: there are too few shows in this subgenre.I'm watching Break Blade movies, may we count it toward fantasy or "quartz magic" doesn't apply for it? Also, Mangaka or lead mechdesigner probably had his inspiration in Mamoru Nagano works - Golems almost look like Heavy Metals/some grunt Mortar Headds.
>>15206404
I wish the novel translations didn't just vanish. We got like the first two or three in english and then they pulled the plug.
>>15206317
>BTW, none of these shows even establishes consistent rules
Escaflowne kinda does. Even the luck manipulation machine runs on newtonian rules.
>>15206471
Some of the ancillary stuff's kind of wonky(mostly thinking of Dilandau's transformation and the like), but otherwise, yeah, it's pretty self-consistent.
>>15206403
I really can't think of the name of it, but I swear I've seen like two adult visual novels that were fantasy mecha. I've been on the internet too long man, I lost track of them.
>>15206600
I know exactly what it was. it was the Legend of Lyon Flare reboot series
original was pretty M too now that I think of it
Yep, just double checked. Jet Black Devil from Shin Reyon Densetsu.
kinda got a DyGenGuard thing going on. It pretty much just shows up at the end and wrecks house though.
shits pretty obari though
someone update the chart
>>15206424
>I've always found Dunbine to be a very interesting series because the series is basically about an escalating technological arms race that ensues when a traditional medieval fantasy setting is given airships and mecha in increasingly large numbers, and the battlefield rapidly modernises as a result.
So just like G-Reco eh ?
>>15206656
Superficially, but it's more like it starts with one or two Aura Battlers and some air-carriers full of soldiers besieging castles, and it ends with fleets of battleships and dozens and dozens of Aura Battlers fighting.
K.O. Beast Century -- magic super-bot.
Modern-day setting, but Polynesian god battling other Polynesian gods. Holy Moana!
God Mazinger in pre-historic fantasy realm...
>>15206253
Reminder that the Maze movie is lost forever.
>>15206695
That's kind of the exact opposite of what we're talking about though. That's a modern setting with a fantasy element brought into it. We're talking about fantasy settings with mechs added.
Wild Arms is a weird wild west fantasy but a lot of the games toss in golems (read giant fucking robots) 5 goes full Giant Robo in places too.
>>15206708
I remember that /a/ thread. That was a fun boobie filled good time. Im surprised we even got the LD rips of the series. Shame there's no higher quality source for the uncensored version
>>15206641
Should humanoid aliens on an alien planet where they have mecha but dress like middle-ages peeps really be considered fantasy? Otherwise all of the Star Trek franchise qualifies as the greatest "mecha fantasy" series ever.
>>15206471
>if you overload someone with good luck, then it has to be equalled out by amazingly bad luck
How did Newton not see this coming?
>show loosely adapting the legend of Yamato Takeru fighting the evil Orochi
>rushed halfway through because the movie it was a tie-in for bombed
At least Shuuji Iuchi fared better with Wataru.
>>15206708
Not even George J. Horvath could find it, and he's obsessed with various obscure oldies. Heck, I doubt Nanto even tried looking for it.
>>15206317
>it's kinda cheesy
KYS
I fucking loveEscaflowne
I wish the mecha genre wasnt so shitty.
Shingeki no Bahamut had some golem-theme mechs in it.
Not that they weren't quickly obliterated but it's cool that they bothered.
Noone in here has mentioned Lord of Lords Ryu Knight?
I know it's not amazing but fuck you
>>15209086
Is it even subbed?
>>15206253
>Why is Fantasy Mecha so under appreciated?
probably because very little of it has been translated into English, I imagine if at least one of Wataru, Knight Lamune, Granzort, or Ryu Knight had gotten brought over to the States in the 90's(or maybe Dunbine, Galient, God Mazinger, or Laynzer in the 80's) the genre would be more popular
Fantasy mecha is the best genre.
ANCIENT ALIENS is the best cliché.
They're even better together.
Something cool you might not have known, there was a fantasy mecha video game by FROM on the Dreamcast that played like Armored Core, customizable mechs and everything
>>15209099
Yeah, that show's got full subs uploaded, like on9anime
>>15209164
Ill just check bakabt, thanks
>>15209163
Man, FROM did cool shit back in the day, and occasionally do something to that degree today.
>>15209173
FROM have always been based as hell, their "milking" the souls games is no different from how they "milked" Armored Core. They just get on a kick and don't want to stop, like if you put a favorite song on repeat.
Used to make some cool RPGs back in the day too like Evergrace
>>15209163
Welp, time to find a Dreamcast emulator.
>fantasy mecha thread
>no FSS
you disappoint me /m/
>>15209206
It's really just super advanced tech that looks like magic
>>15206333
The manga have mechs
>>15209284
There are legit wizards too and freaking dragons.
>>15209206
you know what? FUCK FSS and FUCK NAGANO! It's nothing but him jacking off to his own designs
I heard on /m/ that Yutaka Izubuchi made his own fantasy mecha series called Rune Masquer, which looks like it has some bitchin' mecha design. Pic related!
>>15209427
No scanlation though.
Never been a huge fan of the fantasy stuff. Anything with that sort of aesthetic just doesn't do it for me the same way a Yuusha robo does.

Holy crap, that's from Shaman King? Wow. The other archangels look pretty neat too.
>>15209125

nearly all of them have been, even if it's just wonky HKsubs.
The only notable exceptions are most of the first Lamune and God Mazinger.
>>15209397
Personally, I don't like his redesigns.

It definitely counts.

>>15210055
See you in your next thread, Lazyrager.
>>15206404
God, I know what you mean so much. It's frustrating how hard it is to recommend to people since its story is a rather slow burn and on the surface, it doesn't stand out in any spectacular manner.
But I'll be damned if it isn't the coziest show I've ever watched. That ending sequence alone hits me with an almost overwhelming dose of nostalgia.
>>15209940
If Musashi Road counts, Subdivers is currently tackling it.
>Medarot Damashii
Oh shit, they are taking a hit for SquareSubs. Pretty honorable of them, I'd say.
>>15210030
In New Dunbine's case, they sure are indecipherable. At least Wataru's are decent outside of the wordplay.
>>15210053
>there are people who dropped Gasaraki because they can't stand mysterious magical Noh myth in their super gritty and real mecha show
look at this badass metal Oni warrior, japanese myth are real fuckin neatos
>>15206333
The first season is mostly accurate to the manga. The second season has some major changes and the ending is quite different.
>>15206650

>>15211575
That's Takahashi for you. The last time he went full-on fantasy, Mozaika got cancelled due to lack of OVA sales, so that's a no-go.
Wouldn't Sakura Wars also fall in this category?
>>15206322
Broken blade gave me massive boners.
>>15211656
that's more steam punk with some Shinto mysticisms tossed in
>>15206253
For one thing, at least for me, Escaflowne kits cost a fucking arm and leg
I'd love to get a Granzort kit, but can't find one
>>15209173
Get ready because Miyazaki said he wants to do magic mechas in the future.

I'm a fan of Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar

He's probably some homosexual who thinks Muv-Luv is "hentai."
>>15210380
Dunbine OVA has decent subs. They were shared on /m/ fairly recently.
>>15211937
Imagine if it were the other Miyazaki.
>>15209427
Siegfried a shit.
>>15209454
That's from Galient.
Is there a reason why Japan doesn't indulge more into fantasy mecha? Because they have a surprisingly rich collection of fantasy series of their own as well as mecha anime. You'd think that combining the 2 would be easy as cake.
Hell, I'm a huge fan of the Ramune series which is fantasy mecha within an RPG setting.
>>15214321
Mecha was declining when fantasy was gaining popularity so they didn't overlap for long, now only isekai is really profitable and isekai fans weren't born in early 90s.
>>15214321
Incidentally, the Ramune anon finally posted a new release.
>>15214679
>>15214321
>You'd think that combining the 2 would be easy as cake.
Not everything is chocolate and peanut butter, anon
>>15211572
That is some stormtrooper marksmanship.
>>15215526
To be fair, the guy does score a couple of direct hits, but the Kugai just shrugs them off.
>>15209194
I got you, homie.
>>15215840
Wait shit, would help if I posted it.

Do you know where I can find some of the side story stuff for Dunbine? I think it was called Aura Phantasm or something and it had a ton of redesigns.
>>15215902
http://www.oocities.org/gundam_storage/gallery_ap.html
>>15214321
This wildly depends on how and what.
Even if you have a fleshed-out setting doesn't mean jack if you screw the execution.
I really would love if Japan produced more fantasy mecha shows and even games, but this requires some more effort into it than in case of a vanilla real or super robot show like Gundam or GaoGaiGar.
>>15206673
Series any good
>>15207132
Nobody in Japan has it?
>>15219450
It's entertaining and pretty short. Decent way to kill a rainy day.

It was never put on home video, and word has it that the cels got lost somehow (presumably via flood). It would take a miracle.
>>15220171
nobody holds on to cels
>>15219487
That seems dangerously '90s.
>>15206253
Because mecha fans only love hardcore sci-fi and Fantasy fans hate giant robots.
>>15210376
Really ? I'll give it another go then. I've watched the first episode but it was boring.
>>15220904
Yeah, it takes a bit. I'd say you want to give it at least until episode 6 or so.
her smile couldn't be saved
>>15221039
I saw someone write her name as "Shiizu" once. This annoyed me more than it probably should have.
>>15206673
I really wish there was more of it, the mechs are cool and the show is pretty fun.
>>15211615
Yeah, but that's because a) everything was painfully lifted from Star Wars
b) It had the same quality animation of Votoms and Dunbine. The shows, not the OVAs. 1983 TV quality. In 1991.
>>15222518
>1983 TV quality. In 1991.
That is fine, since the early 90s were a transitionary period. Imitating SW a little too close is a bit of a sore point, on the other hand (even if Vader never got killed in the first movie, unlike the analogue in here).
If you count Knight Gundam and Sangokuden, then yes.
