It's not an instant, immediate change, but yeah there's an upswing about halfway through and it escalates from there. Personally it made me even appreciate the earlier stuff after the fact, it's a fucking weird feeling.

Fafner is a series you have to persevere with but once it has you you'll look back at those first episodes and realise that they too were good.

If you don't dig it by episode 6, try the OVA, then jump back in at 7.

If that still doesn't jive with you, you could try (and I really wouldn't suggest it) jumping in on Exodus. You'll miss a lot of context and a lot of the emotional/thematic payout is gonna have significantly less weight, but it's totally possible for you do enjoy the show. It gives you the lore and exposition through random bits of jargon too, but it would take a while to get the whole picture.

I think on the first viewing s1 is rough, but when you come back after watching the whole series it's cool because you start to notice a lot of details and stuff that were set up for later.

Different anon here, I jumped into this series recently because I was impressed by the PV for the new Fafner season they are making, I', currently on episode 6 where that handicapped girl took herself out to protect the island ;_;. I thought the pacing was a bit too slow but I'm enjoying it so far, so I'm glad that it picks up soon. Loving the mech designs so far, they remind me of Gundam 00 for some weird reason. Godamnit the handicapped girl blew up one of the coolest designs so far, I'm really hoping it comes back somehow. Also, the plot is super similar to Eva, hopefully not too much.

I love Fafner as much as the next person, but anyone who says "Fafner was always good" is just going to dissuade people like OP from watching the rest.

OP, your feelings are valid. The first five episodes are a comfy slow build (which is fucking fantastic on rewatch, by the way), but you're not the only person to complain that it's not as good as you expected. Also, the 1v1 format of the fights in the first few episodes isn't Xebec at its best in terms of fights. Both of these things get better around episode 13.

The first batch of episodes ARE good, but only in a way you really appreciate once you know all the ironies and subtle development going on, like how Fumihiko is the one who basically makes it so no one tells the kids about Assimilation Phenomenon in an unspoken order because he couldn't bring himself to tell Kazuki or the look Yumiko gives her mother when she's getting drunk after having to tell all the parents about the selected pilots that you ONLY know why she gave that look after watching the series.

I can't call that shit anything but good, not great because it still hadn't gotten everything perfect, but good.

Sure the first few episode are more a "vaillain of the week" and "fucked up robot piloting" plot, but that changes really quickly and after that it's a completely different beast.

Once you're done witht he series and you've finnished Exodus, come back and reread that statement, you'll get a good chuckle out of yourself.
