No, CB just uses small explosives on pilots to again wound them. They would put an explosive they intended to detonate right next to an original GN Drive.

I know that Astrea is the prototype of Exia, and as such features weapons that are earlier version's of Exia's loadout.
However in the show they explicitly mention that Exia is given a GN Sword specifically so that it can serve as a trump card in the event that there is Gundam, to Gundam combat.
In other words, by giving the Astrea the same weapon, it defeats the purpose of the Exia being CB's trump card against Gundam-type opponents.

The 2nd generation Gundams were never meant to be used in combat, they were only specialized developments of the basic GN powered MS toward different combat roles. After development was finished, they would have likely been dismantled and recycled or something. Fereshte was only created and given the 2nd generation Gundams after it was suggested by Chall Acoustica as an addition to Aeolia's plan and Veda approved it.

Also, Exia was designated the trump card because its pilot was judged to have the most faith in CB and Aeolia's plan/ideals, and would be least likely to turn traitor.

Keep in mind that Exia being the trump card was not a foolproof plan as Veda became compromised. The traitors in CB were able to develop the Gundam Throne Zwei which also has a large GN sword of its own and is arguably more effective than the Exia for anti-Gundam combat (ignoring the endurance limits of tau drives and the secret trans-am feature) since it can also use its GN fangs to penetrate GN fields.
