I think that, the angry mouth vents, and their weapons are what really makes the Crossbones stand out. I love the line but I kinda agree that they're solid but nothing extremely special.

Sidestory material explains that Cecily lead a counteroffensive against the remaining Cosmo Babylon and Crossbone Vanguard forces, with Seabook in tow. They completely crushed the Ronah family's influence and control and Cecily usurped everything, which also drove Buch Concern to near-bankruptcy.

It also helped that the most prominent figure for advancing the CB war front was the crazy guy in the giant robot flower. Imagine if early into the OYW Amuro killed Gihren before even Garma was betrayed.

The Federation retook Frontier IV, which was originally seized by the Crossbone Vanguard to build Cosmo Babylonia. They weren't natives of their colony, like Zeon was. Meitzer Ronah, Cecily's grandfather, was from Side 1.

And I don't think Zanscare ever claimed much territory among the various Sides. They came from Side 2 and focused almost exclusively on the Earth.
