This show seriously kicks ass.
>>
>>15189419
Well shit.
>>
>>15189410

I envy you if you're watching it for your first time OP.
>>
>>15189410
>ahead of its time
>80s cop show in the eighties
I dunno I think it came right on time.
>>
>>15189410
it was boring and badly paced, no thanks
>>
>>15189410
>techno-future cop day-to-day drama with boyish lady cop lead
>ahead of its time in the 80s
Are you retarded? It was literally riding a small wave, and fairly late at that.
>>
>>15189607
i hope you don't watch anything else by mamoru oshii, his style is pretty consistent.
>>
>>15189410
...more like you were way behind it's time...
>>
>>15189491
Yep. Just found out about it by chance. Love it, cop anime are great- Noa Izumi is a great character, just all around a kick ass show.
>>
>>15191391
I have and they're all better than Patlabor
>>
>>15191391
Going by the screencap, OP wasn't talking about the Oshii stuff. Now those movies are fucking badly paced, 20+ minutes of characters wandering around Oshii's scenery porn can be cut out of the first movie alone and nothing of value would be lost.
>>
>>15192928
Oshii directed the first OVA.
>>
>>15192931
I completely forgot that the Early Days OVAs, my bad.
>>
>>15192928
I haven't seen the 2nd movie yet- but I've been watching the series and the 1rst movie. It was surprising because the animation is so high quality, it's nice to see something with a lot of detail put into it (not cg).

Just found out they might be rebooting the series too, which is fantastic!
>>
>>15192931

Yeah but he also had a bunch of other people keeping his feet on the ground.

>>15192975

The first movie is pretty great. It's not really till the 2nd or 3rd that things get...divided
>>
Somewhat unrelated, but related to Oshii: is the Kerberos saga worth getting into?
>>
>>15193034
I'm not that happy with the second, but I'd still say watch it if you're at Patlabor/Ryūsuke Ōbayashi fan

The third can go fuck itself.
>>
>>15193050
Not if you like cool things like gasmasked armored soldiers mowing down gommunists with heavy machine guns and finding new purpose to their lives by going rogue against the oppressive fascist state that made them.

But if you like boring things like obtuse, convoluted political intrigue with no notable consequences, forced drama between boring characters who have zero chemistry, and basically anything that could more conveniently be made with real actors on a small budget, then yeah, it's worth getting into.

I heartily recommend it to diehard fans of Derrick.
>>
>>15193097
Welp, that's disappointing.

Thanks man.
>>
>>15193097
Derrick?
>>
>>15193079
Gosh, that reminds me so much of another series- the Eva Rebuilds.
>>
>>15193050
Start with Jin-Roh, then if you really really really really liked that watch Red Spectacles only if you're into low budget obsurce surreal movies.
Then if you're still not finished, watch Stray Dog. It's kinda boring, but OK.
Don't listen to that other anon, Jin-Roh is fantastic because it doesn't become a cliche action movie.
>>
>>15193124
A famous West-German 80s police procedural show that's so dull and depressing that it looks like it was shot in East-Germany in the early 70s.

And much like a lot of Oshii's masterpieces, it's green as fuck, very wordy, deeply psychological, intensely underacted and excruciatingly slow.

The title character is played by a former SS btw.
>>
>>15193140
>Don't listen to that other anon, Jin-Roh is fantastic because it doesn't become a cliche action movie.
>Don't listen to the guy who speaks the truth, Jin-Roh is good because it's bad.

wat

man if that's all it takes for something to be "fantastic" then you must find Derrick to be fucking riveting.
>>
>>15193145
Holy shit, that sounds hilariously bad. I've just pulled it up on the jewtube and yes- it's hilariously bad.

I don't think that Patlabor is nearly that dry. But damn would it be funny to make an anime like that.
>>
>>15193157
That's pretty much what Jin-Roh is, except it's artsier, well-animated and has one decent action scene
>>
>>15193152
Do you know of any other good police/detective based animes ( /m/ or not ) in the line of :Patlabor, and Psycho Pass?
>>
>>15193158
>Jin-Roh
Just saw the trailer, and a short clip from it. Looks like a good popcorn movie.
>>
>>15193168
that's precisely what it ISN'T
>>
>>15193168
>Looks like a good popcorn movie
Can't help but feel that this is why so many people deride Jin-roh, their expectations are betrayed when they actually watched it.
Because they see the two scenes of fantastically well animated actual combat in the movie but they don't realize its a drama/thriller first, and action movie never.
>>
>>15193179
There's that, but there's also the fact that THE DRAMA IS FUCKING WEAK and IT'S NOT THRILLING AT ALL.

Seriously the characters have absolutely no chemistry, no reason to give a shit about each other, and the conspiracy they're involved in seems to have no discernible motive other than "this one guy wants to fuck over this one other guy".

It's just a mess of double-crossings between characters who visibly don't care about being double-crossed, expect it to happen, and mostly let it happen; and at the end the dude cries because the girl got killed and apparently now he has emotions I guess?

Oh and there's a vague little red riding hood/big bad wolf allegory that goes fucking nowhere.
>>
>>15193193
I agree with this guy. Jin-Roh is utterly boring and pointless.
>>
>>15192927
>GitS: Innocence being better than anything
Now I know you're trolling.
>>
>>15193193

The You're Under Arrest movie was better. No giant robots but you give a fuck about the characters. The director didn't try and balance a whole film around someone whose had maybe a paragraph of dialogue

I mean Nagumo? Ive said all Labor girls are best girls and I stand by that but really? That's who you go with?
>>
>>15193050
The Red Spectacles is one of my favourite movies. I consider it to be a high tier pleb filter. It's a very interesting and funny psychological thriller and is actually a very straightforward story despite the odd presentation. I like that Oshii had the balls to take the premise of future cops in big metal armour in such an outlandish direction.
>>
>>15194200
If anything it's to be expected of him, not something that's particularly ballsy
>>
>>15193193
yeah true everyone seems to be shallow or just dead inside
>>
garm wars sucked
>>
>>15194229

Didn't OShii at one point say he puts characters at the bottom of his priority list. I forgot what the rest of it was.
>>
>>15193129
As fucking insane as the EVA Rebuild get, they certainly can't be as boring and pretentious as the third Patlabor movie.
Also as a bonus, the Rebuilds will actually FEATURE THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE FUCKING FRANCHISE.
I mean, fuck that, the movie basically tries to pretend like pretty much anything Patlabor doesn't exist until it's time to have everyone show up at the last 20-15 minutes, and the movie even ends with them going "yeah, we, the evil government were just using you so we could cover this up! Thanks for nothing! Really!" and then they go away.

Also, it's an apt comparison, because the monster they have to fight ends up wearing some weird armor and looks like something out of EVA
But like the rest of the movie, it's boring and slow.
>>
>>15194301
>actually FEATURE THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE FUCKING FRANCHISE.

I actually feel like that's the best thing WXIII has going for it. It's a lot easier to be forgiving to the movie when it's more or less it's own entity that's just in the Patlabor universe. Honestly Id say not having SVU2 at all would have been the smarter choice and had some rando broken or helldiver team show up at the end. As much as the series is carried by it's cast a short diversion here and there isn't so bad.

I don't know if this was brilliant or pants-on-head retarded.

And still nothing has ever matched Patlabor. Most of the shows of today are poorly written trash.
>>
>>15194968
Shit- they made a live action version? Time to do some googling.
>>
>>15195376
The sea monster episode?

I think it was just a tongue-in-cheek reference to Kaiju films. Don't take it too seriously, I think it was a funny episode on its own as strange as it was.
>>
>>15195376
It was pants-on-head brilliant.

>Dat single moment of shared empathy
>>
>>15194009
Is this a good series? I see the movie was made by the same guy that does the Patlabor soundtracks, as far as I remember.
>>
>>15194327
I don't know, was it supposed to be a sidestory, and I missed the memo? Because if that was the case, I wouldn't be complaining that much, I'd just call it mediocre, or hell, just say 'it's just not my taste'.

My problem is that I came in expecting a Patlabor movie and instead I got some detective story, and it decided that it would focus more on the younger fellow and his plot with the 'antagonist' of the film rather than the older more interesting character.

Then the characters I came to see just abruptly appear and it's like "yeah, we';re here now, time for the stupid robots you guys wanted!". My problem is that even without the main characters, it didn't feel like they were even in the same universe, and what parts of the series that made it unmistakably patlabor is ignored for as long as possible.

To me, I like it to someone looking up mysterious disapperances on Earth, while working with the government, finding out that a ghost is causing them, and then oh yeah, there are mobile suits! This is UC Gundam! Even if you don't have mobile suits crawling around every seen, it should at least be apparent that you're in UC Gundam.
>>
>>15196524
the OVAs are amazing
the series is fun but looks pretty bad (the only well-animated shot in the whole series is a close-up of Natsumi's hi-cut bikini butt)
>>
>>15196635
So start with the OVAs and then watch the movie? Sounds good.
>>
>>15196598
The chapters from the manga that origined this story originally are pretty good. And they have the SV2.
>>
>>15196664

It goes

OVA-Movies
TV-OVA2

But Im gonna let you in on a secret. Time line doesn't really matter that much. The only major difference is the first couple of episodes where they build the team but after that they could just as easily all be the same thing.

The only differences in personalities are minor at best and outside one two part OVA and a few multi part TV episodes there's little to worry about in ongoing narrative. The series is more character focused and they all have strong enough personalities to where you can figure them out just by watching them.

That's not to say there's no growth, there is but it's really very subtle and organic rather than THING HAPPENED NOW WE'RE DIFFERENT

When I first watched the series it was on some Asian channel we got as part of our cable package so it was all out of order and I didn't even know there was a split till I bought the DVDs
>>
>>15195940
let us know if you find subs for anything besides the first episode. thanks.
>>
>>15197355
Unfortunately I guess there is only episode 0 and 1.
It seems so good...
>>
>>15197448

I didn't even know we got 1
>>
I heard there was going to be a reboot series by studio khara? Anyone hear anything about it?
>>
>>15199570
It was a 5? minute OVA that came out a few months ago. It was alright for what it was.
