Databook is "Master Archive RGM-79 GM." On the left is the head of a regular RGM-79 GM, and on the right is the head of a GM Sniper II. Behind the visors on a lot of GMs you'll find multiple camera slits, but behind some of them (like the Sniper II and the Jegan) have monoeyes. They all also have cameras in their headcrests to go along with the visor cameras, so they're not strictly relying on monoeyes.

I always though the GINN was a better Zaku than the ZAKU. Never liked the shoulder spikes, they were a product of their time in the 70s but even as an homage they felt out of place in CE.
And the ZAKU for some reason has a drum magazine even though it uses a beam rifle. So instead of form following function it's just "it has to look like a Zaku gun" which did use ammunition.

Well normally when a human is firing a two-handed rifle, they tend to point the opposite shoulder of their firing hand towards the target and bring the weapon across their chest.
This is not only one of the more stable standing firing positions, it also helps reduce your silhouette, meaning theirs less of you for the target to shoot at.

Since the standard Zaku II holds it's machine gun in it's RIGHT hand, it would point it's LEFT Shoulder forward, thus the Shielded one is BEHIND IT and the spiked one is in front.

Well, it was due to be replaced by the Gundam Alex, but in this case it was more of the pilot outgrowing the suit. The Gundam's technology was used by the GM family for a long time.

Everything regarding Missing Link is silly. It's best to take it with a grain of salt, especially since that "cool GM" is actually the Alex on Steroids FOR THE SAME TIME PERIOD, WITH A NEWTYPE PILOT LOLI.

As well, think of the poor Doven Wolf. Its unique Zeon heritage was retconned so that it was actually built off of a side story gundam prototype that they recovered. Like Axis didn't have their own perfectly able, if resource-strapped, MS designers.

The original RX-78-2?
If we're being totally honest, it was slightly superceded by paper specs by the GM Sniper II and the Gelgoog (and the Gelgoog wasn't bound by e-pac limits as it generated its own M particles to shoot beamspam like Char in his Gelgoog in Texas Colony).
Essentially by immediately post-OYW and when the Federation gets access to Zeon Gelgoog technology and melds it with their own advanced GM-series technology is the RX-78-2 obsolete.

There are other prototype gundams during the OYW like the later RX-78-x Gundams and the Alex which blow it the fuck out of the water, but they're one-off prototypes so I deigned to answer from the grunt MS standpoint.

If G-reco kits weren't crap, I would have loved them. They just cut so many corners that it's not worth buying several. I have one Jahannam and the gun trigger doesn't even fit into the hand (it just floats above the closed fist). The beam axe just wobbles about in the other hand.
Bandai really dropped the ball if they wanted to actually even sell G-reco kits regardless of how popular it was. They just made shelf-warmers that aren't worth buying a lot of times.
