Without going into some 'lolmagic we don't have to explain shit' power source like getter rays or spiral power? The best power source is an antimatter breeder reactor.

The trick to an antimatter breeder reactor is that it converts normal matter into anti matter at a slow and steady rate, which it annihilates for energy, such that the conversion process costs it less energy than it gains from the annihilation. This creates a tremendous amount of power and its incredibly easy to refuel since you can run it on simple elements in space, and in an atmosphere you can just burn the air itself for unlimited fuel.

The only danger to it is that you are using your own power to create your fuel as you go. If you push your mecha to too far, and force it to expend too much energy, you can push yourself below the amount of energy that you need to run the conversion, stalling out until you can find an external source of power to jump-start your mecha again.

Antimatter is the most effective energy release possible within the bounds of physics, and this is the most reliable variant of that powersource. You can't beat it without magic.

It doesn't, and let me explain how.

The problem is that you are conflating the USEFULNESS of the energy with the total energy in the fuel supply.

An antiproton contains exactly as much total energy as a proton, its just a different charge. While changing the charge of matter is certainly a feat, all it has to do is cost lost energy than the total annihilation of TWO protons, because that's what happens when you use it for fuel.

Even if it costs a whole proton worth of energy to convert 1 proton's charge, the resulting annihilation gives you enough to pay that debt plus enough to convert the next proton. So after just a couple reactions, you are steadily in the green and will stay there as long as you have more fuel to convert.

The only way this system really fails is if it costs more energy to convert the charge of matter than that matter itself contains, and that actually does violate conservation of energy.
