It's not very good, to be honest. And very loosely based on the original manga, which is much better.

Skaro started the last arc of the show, but it's Skaro so God knows if he will ever release another one. Still, it's not really worth the effort, it has one of the worst animation quality I've seen and they took a lot of liberties and stupid decisions like changing iconic designs such as Black Ox for no good reason.
>>
>>15178322
It's been ages since the last episode release, so most people will be ripe as a dried raisin by the time Nanto even remembers doing that show.

In any case, isn't Imagawa's Tetsujin the only good anime version anyway?

>In any case, isn't Imagawa's Tetsujin the only good anime version anyway?

It really is. Yokoyama had bad luck when it comes to anime adaptations, most of them are pretty mediocre or just bad. It's said Gigantor skipped the first 26 episodes because of WWII references, but that's most likely not really the case since those could be edited out pretty easily.

The truth is, those original episodes, while sticking closer to the manga (at least in terms of villains, as the rest of the series was made only of TV exclusive plots), were really badly done. It's really amateurish-looking, the only good thing to come out from it is the theme songs for Shotaro and Tetsujin.
>>
>>15178534
Supposedly, the man himself was pretty lax when it came to people adapting his stuff. I suppose it's a mixed blessing that his family estate barely lets anybody use his IPs anymore without paying.

At the least, the partial adaptation for his version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms could use better subs.

As for the manga, I would give up any hope of it ever being scanlated as well, It's a great manga, but really old and long. And there's actually three different editions with partially different content! The original Tetsujin was not created by Shotaro's father, that was a later addition to the Kappa Comics edition, which skip seven volumes of the original run and got most stories in the wrong order as well as cutting out some stuff. For example, Black Ox shows up at volume 3, but the Black Ox origin story is only showed at volume 14.

And then, Kappa Comics scrapped the entire Bracchus story arc, and it explodes before even making its debut. It's really bizarre and I just can't figure out why they did it.. Originally Bracchus appeared fighting Tetsujin for several chapters. He was the first true rival to Tetsujin. Early stories in the series were more about Shotaro, the Murasame brothers and the police fighting bad guys over the remote control, Tetsujin could do as much harm as he did good and Shotaro only got to control him a few times, he's under the control of the villains in several occasions. Later the series adopted a new style with a new robot rival appearing each story arc and Shotaro always had the control over Tetsujin. That's why they came up to the new origin story for the kids who didn't had read the original serialized run, so Shotaro only owns Tetsujin because he inherited it from his father.

For as much as SystematicChaos is a self-admitted Yokoyama fanboy, he and his team still will do dozens, if not hundreds of manly manga before they could consider getting to that point, yet they are this manga's best hope of anybody tackling it.

Then again, Hox conquered Three Kingdoms, which was three times as long, so who knows.

I actually had to buy a completely different edtion just to see Tetsujin fight Bracchus. This new one was released by the time of the Imagawa series was airing in Japan. Reading Tetsujin can be really a headache if you're not aware of all this. I remember reading all 24 volumes of the Kappa Comics edition and wondering why Imagawa used Bracchus there since he only showed up for 2 pages, while skipping others like Monster, who shows up only in that brief scene from the first episode. Turns out Bracchus did existed in the manga, but they just decided to change the ending to the Artificial Human story (that guy who look like Frankenstein Monster) and didn't publish the Bracchus arc at all... I have no idea if that was Yokoyama's idea or what, but it feels really odd. Other stories had a few bits cut off, but nothing drastic like this.

Yokoyama sometimes would cut stories out because he was not satisfied with it. It's said the Giant Robo manga was not reprinted for decades because he was not really satisfied with the result. The edition we eventually got came right after his death and was a faithful reproduction of the magazine print, even with those notes at the borders of the pages. Babel II was supposed to end at Part 3, but editors insisted to him to make Part 4 to run alongside the then recent anime TV series. But he was not fond of it and got it cut from later reprints and replaced with a new sequel series called Sono Na Wa 101. So it's possible he was not fond of that story for some reason or another. It's odd since he actually had some input on the Imagawa series, it was his idea to have Tetsujin melted at the end. The original manga had no true ending, it just stops, so that was his chance to give it a proper conclusion.

Recently, they released this collector box editions which includes even essays, advertising and color pages from the original magazine run. But they're also really expensive so I can't tell for sure. The 2004 edition is one of the most complete, but they chose to reprint everything exactly as they looked like originally. Yokoyama actually redrew a lot of stuff for reprints back in the day. The art looks really crude in some of the earlier volumes. But it's the most complete as you can get.

Here's what the remade version from the 60s looks like in comparison to the original magazine run from the 50s. The 2004 edition uses the original art, so your only choice is to chose between the old redrawn version (which is out of print, by the way, so you can only find in auctions these days) or the more complete modern print with the cruder art style.
>>
>>15178866

Here's an comparison for Tetsujin's first appearance in the series. Personally, I liked the redrawn edition better, it works like some sort of "Director's Cut". It takes forever for Tetsujin to get into action in the old one. Yokoyama actually fixed a few bits in the newer version. But well, I guess that edition is already fated to be lost since the most recent reprint uses the old one.

The other solution is to just get the Kappa comics version. So those early stories didn't existed and Tetsujin and all the characters already looks just like they usually do. It's also the only version of the origin to features Shotaro's father as Tetsujin creator. But then you lose some iconic moments like Ryusaku's death, that's also in the Imagawa anime. Actually, the 2004 anime is almost like a "Best of" of Tetsujin. It features elements from all these different editions and retellings. Yeah, even the very early one. When Shotaro find that recorder with his father's last words, he finds that mini remote controlled robot with it, that thing only appears in the original print and is cut from the redrawn edition. Imagawa went into crazy lengths to reference even the most obscure stuff.

>>15178944
So basically, there's
1. Kappa Edition: the redrawn Tetsujin-28, cuts out some stories from the original and adds a new origin story.
2. 2004 Edition: The original magazine printing.
Right?
>>
>>15179067
The original magazine printing is basically the 1950s Edition. Are you talking about the 2004 reprint?
>>
>>15177612
If you're talking about the 60s series only few episodes got subbed

Other than having the lack of proper ending, were original Tetsujin manga versions confusing?
>>
>>15179236
>Are you talking about the 2004 reprint?
Yeah.
>>
>>15179067
Pretty much. But there's some of the earlier stories (about 5 or 6 volumes of the 2004 editions) were reprinted with new art work in some earlier reprint. As far as I know, these editions are not avaliable anymore since they decided to go with Yokoyama's original drawings for the most recent reprint. I'm not sure about the content of the collector's box edition, though, but it seems to be pretty close to the original magazine print. I would need to check some japanese blogs to know for sure.
>>
>>15179434
Oh, and the color ones were redone, actually. But all of the material restored for the 2004 were black and white. Both that earlier edition and kappa comics keep with the color pages.
>>
By the way, do you guys have the Mediafire rar of Tetsujin 28 manga series other than vol. 1?
>>
>>15178874
Yeah, but you'd think someone would sub it since it's a bunch of shorts, even Doamaiger D got subs and that had to get Funimation's involvement. On the other hand, Washimo never got any, so...

This reminds me, Orphan Subs don't really seem to care about mechs (outside of this short and redoing Ehrgeiz, of all things). It's a shame, since there's a bunch of shows lost to time that would benefit from their support.

In any case, it feels good to know that most GR adaptations are enjoyable despite diverging from the source, at least.

Funny thing is, the tokusatsu show was not even really based on the manga. Tohru Hirayama was visiting Yokoyama to discuss some stuff for Kamen no Ninja Akakage and saw him drawing Giant Robo. He just said "Please, let me do a show with this robot". Yokoyama said yes and production for the show started before the manga was even out. He didn't even had a story by this point.

2004 series question

Yes, and that series has that DARKER tone especially in the final episode
>>
>>15196898
Nobody wants to see icky girls in robot shows, anon.
>>
>>15196898
Actually, the original manga had no women in the cast at all. Except for Shikishima and Otsuka's wives, who would occasionally show up. Miss Takamizawa's design was based on them, but her role and personality is pretty much all Imagawa. Another big difference in the show is that Kenji actually doesn't care for using guns at all, also Imagawa's doing. The Murasame brothers use guns all the time in the manga, but they're more like gentlemen thieves who would never shoot anyone in the back. I believe that the reason he did that is to go with the "Weapons are a tool and being good or evil depends on who uses it" theme.

>>15196913
I think the manga had a very similar tone as well. It's pretty hard boiled, people die and get killed all the time. I think what really sets them apart is that Imagawa's version can be a lot more melodramatic than when the same events take place in the manga. The manga is more like an old movie serial, the themes in the stories are not really correlated except for a few recurring villains. Imagawa got all that and made into a single cohesive plot with a beginning, middle and end.
>>
>>15196898
It's the 50s and Shotaro is hanging out mostly with scientists and police. Not really a setting that's going to have lots of women in it.
>>
Is Yokoyama the most hard boiled mangaka? I think he's pretty much top 5 at the very least.
>>
>>15197147
He is up there. Even his historical manga are presented in a matter-of-fact way.

No. Actually, Robbie as a whole is a very different character in the manga, he was pure evil and wanted to destroy humanity for having no purpose in his plans of rebuilding the world with robots. In the show, he acts like a baby while manga Robbie is super inteligent. And he had nothing to do with VL-2 either. Well, sometimes the anime would mix up more than one story together. For example, Black Ox doesn't appear in the same story as the Jinzou Ningen(the frankenstein monster-thing), but Imagawa put the two together because they were both Dr. Franken's creations. The show has only 26 episodes while the manga is almost 30 volumes. A lot had to get cut or spliced together to be in terms with Imagawa's overreaching plot.
