it's mostly enjoyable for what it is. music is great, animation's so-so especially in the beginning, but that's to be expected with a 50 episode 90s TV anime where the greater focus is on character, story, and music rather than visuals

It's a 50+ep commercial trying to sell you CDs.

The music compilation is probably the best in the franchise, but everything else about it was mediocre. It's biggest problem is that it's extremely repetitive in the way it recycles stock footage and repeats the same music. It's slow pacing doesn't help matters either as generally the basic format of each episode amounts to: Bad guy shows up, somebody sings a song at them until they leave. This repeats for 5 or so episodes at a time before something else happens that advances the story.

It's a shame that the compilation movie was so haphazardly edited.

When the story is moving, it's good, really good. But the rest of it is shit. No amount of pay-off is worth it when a series asks the viewers to suffer through that much filler.

M7 is decently entertaining, when stuff actually starts happening of course. I just wish it didn't start the trend of having every TV series after it making its singers into nothing more than a superpower plot devices. Once was plenty enough.

A fair 6/10 overall, for the TV show and its OVAs.

Once the initial appeal of the kickass music and fun concept wears off and you realize how boring, full of filler, and meandering the actual show is it gets tiring fast. You could cut out half of the episodes and not lose track of the plot.

Just download the albums and listen to those.

Unfortunately every Macross show after 7 is even worse.

Kawamori didn't have much to do with 7. He basically just came up with the concepts. He wasn't directly involved with the production of the show.
