I don't the obsession /m/ has in trying to come up with a classification of mecha genre. It is always doomed to failure. The way I see it, if an anime show has robots (doesn't matter giant, medium, small, sentient or not, autonomous or not, goldlike or not), it is mecha irrespective of anything else.
