I too went into G Reco for the designs and similarly was not happy with the show. After coming in way late to IBO I have to say I wish I had given it a chance because it has great mech designs too and season 1 is 10/10. Season 2 is about an 8/10 right now, but we'll see how it turns out.

Nah, I think it's too early for that. Without Eugene and Hotarubi Tekkadan can't even hope to be a match against Rustal and his fleet. He might die in the final battle or if this one stretches out between several episodes. Which likely won't be the case as it would take away the focus from conclusion of Akihiro's side plot and Rex's debut. It's gonna be just a bloody blitzkrieg unlels something unexpected happens. I don't think IBO's fans are Gundam-virgins, I think it's more IBO is giving them what they always wanted from the franchise. They want a non-prettyboy protagonist who can kill without hesitation and doesn't whine about how awful war is, so they flock to Mika. They're tired of stock footage beamspam, so IBO focuses on melee. They're tired of beam weapons = 1-hit kills, so the lack of beam weapons make that even sweeter. We could make a list of these things that IBO does and you'll see that it is exactly what the fanbase in America has been wanting for years.

It kinda reminds me of some of the reviews I've seen for MGS1 when it came out, where people loved the gameplay but complained about the story and how preachy it was. They didn't care about the messages and memes the game tried to pass on, they just wanted to indulge in the behavior the game called them out on.

By the time they were applying changes to the script they'd already known Ein would be beating those three up, which means they were animating those scenes already knowing nobody was going to die. Hell, even before that, even at the pre-Einzilla stage they had already known nobody would die. The episodes are scripted and animated good 4 weeks in advance.

-MC is a great Model Builder already, but knew nothing of Gundam before returning to his Late Grandfather's Hobby Shop to find it's become the new craze
-Only starts Gunpla because the new owner thinks he's his only shot to oust the elitist jerks who now all but own the shop
-MC basically brings the Model Building know-how while other characters provide him the Gundam Franchise history and context
