Out of the whole show, I'd say there only several good episodes. Even in the second half it tends to drag on and meander around with shit that doesn't have much impact despite the stock footage being pretty great.

It would definitely have benefited from having good episodic interactions like in Sailor Moon but I suppose there's only so much you can do with Mamoru. I don't even hate kid or genki characters but his entire existance felt so forced and boring. Also the GGG crew returning alive after GaoGaiGar was defeated when King J Der first appeared was absolute bullshit even by super robot standards.

Still, it's an enjoyable show if you love giant robots. The final battles are pretty classic and exciting.

My guess is that the combined "defensive" left hand and "offensive" right hand allow Guy to pierce into the Zonder robo without destroying it completely. As in, if he didn't use the "defensive" power, the whole thing would just blow up and kill the trapped human. Once the core is accessible, Guy can separate the two hands and pull the core out.

GGG is a very well made but very orthodox MOTW show and one of the better shows in the Yuusha franchise, but it's not necessarily much more than that.

It does target an older audience than most other Yuusha shows (which is to say, 8 to 16-year-olds instead of 4 to 12-year olds), and it was one of the better mostly traditionally animated 52 episode shows (not that it lacked for CGI). Both of which made it somewhat more palatable to a western audience compared to other shows. It also had the good fortune to be fan-translated just when /m/ had become a hub for western mecha fans. In a sense, a lot of things came together just right to make it as popular as it was.

This isn't to say it doesn't deserve it's reputation as an excellent show. I happen to like it quite a bit.

But it's not the end-all-be-all of mecha anime, or even the end-all-be-all MOTW mecha show. (That trophy belongs to Daiku Maryu: Gaiking.)

The only Yuusha show I've watched besides GGG was Mightgaine, and while GGG was better on the whole, it was not astonishingly better. I could totally believe that an earlier show was better still.
