real answer:
VS Destoroyah - Action packed, great monster design, good writing and themes, melt down godzilla is best suit and one of the best plot points in a godzilla movie. Ending is beautiful. (though cheapened by juniors ressurection IMO).

VS Biollante - one of the best stories and monster design. Only flaw is lack of actual action but it still manages to be entertaining which is more than you can say about a lot of the talky parts in the other movies

VS Hedorah - Very unique Godzilla, many mixed opinions. Dark, oppressive atmosphere mixed with a hint of psychedelia and then throw in some of the most ridiculous scenes in a Godzilla movie. Great visuals and great fights, though the radiation-wall stuff drags on a bit too long IMO

VS Mechagodzilla - Any movie with mechagodzilla is going to be good because it's guaranteed to be filled with laser effects and explosions. Beautiful sets and tropical sounding music. King Caesar provides a good contrast in fighting style to godzilla. Fight scenes get pretty brutal and godzilla actually bleeds.

VS Space Godzilla - You can take or leave this rec, I put it ahead of Ghidora 1 simply because I love the visuals of the crystals popping up in the city, crystals flying at godzilla and exploding. This element alone makes the fight scenes somewhat surreal and very beautiful to watch. Space Godzilla as a monster design is kind of whatever, but the monster fights are great with a lot of suit-destruction.

my least favorites not counting Gabara or iguanazilla:
Return of Godzilla - Tries to do what the original did with some later-series gimmicks, doesnt do it as well and is just boring.
Godzilla 2015 - terrible characters i dont give a fuck about zipping between locations saying stupid lines and accomplishing nothing. godzilla with a +100% stealth rating if in smoke. CG fights look like CG and the angular design of the Mutos doesnt help alleviate the CG feel.

Destoroyah is ass. It's so boring and why does everybody just know when Godzilla is gonna die? How do they know about the specifics? Why aren't they more worried about the world potentially ending? Why is the connection to G54 so underutilized? Why are the effects in this movie so much more worse than the ones in Gamera Guardian of the Universe, a movie that released the same year with half the budget?

Destoroyah has so many good ideas and concepts that are squandered in their execution. The meltdown itself is executed well and there's some nice visuals but as a whole it's awful.

Godzilla fans are the fucking worst, they dismiss any and all substance in the movies because they're idiots who don't want to come off as nerds/childish/defensive fanboys.

For starters, normies like newer films so they would be much more eager to watch something like G14 or Shin just for the sake of assuming they have better special effects and a more relatable modern setting

The second reason is that Honda films are old and it shows and for most of them you would have to introduce some context for the normies to understand them, and by understanding I don't mean the plot, I mean the effects, the acting, the age in which they were made, the place they fill in the continuity

When I watch older Godzilla movies with friends I always find myself explaining to them why many things are like they are, that didn't happen so much with G14 and Shin

The third reason is the tone of the film, older Godzilla films can turn from kiddie fun to fucking serious in a whim, this confuses western viewers that are not familiar with the material.

And last, you have to consider that oriental film-making is different from western film-making and it is niche and not targeted to an international commoner audience unlike films like Shin which, by virtue of having Anno as a director, drink from western influences

I'm probably speaking from limited experience, but many newcomers also have a hard time accepting the monsters themselves. I don't mean just the suit effects, but also the often fanciful designs, the powers and the personalities. They're not like the monsters you'd see in Hollywood movies.

That's how I normally approach these films. And I think the works by Honda (his early efforts besides KK v G), Anno (Shin Godzilla), and Kaneko (GMK) hold up the best under scrutiny. I'll throw Godzilla vs Hedorah and Godzilla vs Biollante (strongest of the Heisei Collection imo) in there too.

It's understandably one of the most reviled entries in this series, though I would be up for a serious interpretation of the basic ideas at play here.

If you drop the most childish elements and the stock footage you're left with some pretty interesting meta kino. Slice-of-life and coming-of-age story set in Post-Occupation Japan revolving around a neglected youth taking inspiration from media in order to better deal with his lackluster life. Would have been ripe for social commentary.

I really wonder how Toho convinced Honda to direct what the final product ended up being. Seems like something he would have vehemently opposed.

My favorite director is Ishiro Honda, not only because he directed the first (and best) Godzilla movie and many of the Showa-era classics, but also because he lived a very interesting life. He's a personal inspiration of mine.

As far as the Godzilla franchise is concerned, I'd be glad if the Americans did all of the franchise/shared-universe work while Toho takes a back seat and releases quality flicks like Shin Godzilla every 5-10 years.

Early Showa Era holds up the best under intense scrutiny. It has Godzilla, Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidrah, and Monster Zero in its favor. The most questionable titles under this umbrella are Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla vs The Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, and DAM. Honda, fucking easily. While the quality of the later films will vary he was most active during the absolute pinnacle of Toho's work. Fukuda's also pretty solid, with Megalon being the only disappointment to his name. Even something like Gigan is impressive in that it was created with all of those limitations in place. Kaneko, Banno, and Anno all had decent one-off goes.

I think the franchise should just keep trying different things. Shin Godzilla/Anime/Whatever. Repetition and stagnation is what killed Godzilla under Tomiyama's watch. That, and give the projects room to breathe and grow. You can't produce things like the factory Toho was in the 60s.

Just came back. Whole lot of fun. The idea of Legendary's kaiju movies being serious and grounded like 2014 is fucking dead now and I am pretty hype for Godzilla 2 because of it.

I like how Kong did a Voltes V trick on that lizard that looks like Cubone.

That propeller with chains, and the way Kong unsheat the tree is like the common laser sword unsheathing of mechs.

It was okay. Monster scenes were top tier, but everything else was kinda meh. I didn't really Skull Island as a place that much.

Really? I was expecting a similar overhaul ala G14. I mean, I can't see an American audience stomaching something like cute, bright and colorful Mothra.

Though you might be right with Rodan and King-G, I can see them only being made more drab in color.

King Ghidorah is the predator to Rodan, Mortha and Godzilla. For Kong, I don't know. Doubt they'd have them fight on Skull Island, so territory would be the only reason I'd think.

We get a lot of talk about Hollow Earth theory and how Skull Island is actually a portal into Hollow Earth.

I feel like anything's possible now for Godzilla 2. That we might actually see Mothra's fairies and that Ghidorah will be this ancient evil that came from space.
