How bad is this tv series adaptation? Does it fall into "Take a vaguely interesting premise for a setting to use as a hook, have nothing of value happen, refuse to explore the hook or premise in any meaningful way" trap that happens to normal tv shows?

No, as someone who read the book its pretty faithful.

The only noteworthy deviation is we are also following an Earth based politician who wasn't in the book for her POV on events as well. Otherwise, its very minor shit like the order certain things happen or playing up a conflict for drama that was glossed over int he books.

How did all one of you enjoy the episode?

I liked most of it until the space battle. Logic seemed to break down for Johnson as soon as the second half of the fight started.
