we bitch about Mecha all the time.

keep in mind, we can't have everything.
but, if we had to pick what is MOST important, and what should ABSOLUTELY STAY THE FUCK OUT, what do we want /m/?

what is the best in a mecha series?

>pick what is MOST important
Giant friggin robots that are cool, get plenty of focus, do fun things that aren't just tiresomely retreading the same old ground over and over again and don't look like total shit. Ideally it isn't the same old recycled designs, but that's not as imperative and can work if done right or just part of a series' identity.

>what should ABSOLUTELY STAY THE FUCK OUT
Things that take away too much attention from the robots. Hamfisted attempts at dorama or serious social and political commentary that just wind up being laughable at best. Relationshit that's hilariously predictable and no one in their right mind should give a fuck about, especially when it engages in very obvious waifubait to try and get people invested.

Now I'm not saying a giant robot show can't do drama, social commentary or try to have characters develop meaningful relationships, I'm saying that shows that very obviously and desperately try to force the issue should stop. It's a giant robots show, no one really expects deep, meaningful writing, we just want an impossible mechanical contraption to stomp shit. As for the relationshit stuff I just find it boring and waifuism should be outlawed.

What's your view on Dougram?

But yeah just give me giant robots beating up other giant robots (or giant monsters, those are allowable too) and I'll be happy.
>>
>>15164432
My view on Dougram is that it did those things well but should not in any way be taken as the norm, and for a genre that is specifically built on a dumb fun concept I don't really care much if they focus on entertainment at the cost of simpler storytelling. Better to at least get the core part right and not sacrifice it in favor of trying to do something serious in a medium that isn't particularly well suited for it.

Being able to admit that the genre is meant to be fun shit to sell toys to children isn't having shit taste, it's just being able to recognize things for what they are. Enjoying hamfisted attempts at "deeper" storytelling cooked up by people that could barely be trusted to write a regular kid's show, now that's shit taste mate. Sick doubleget, btw.

Just copy Five Star Stories.
That's about as perfect as it gets.
>>
>>15164297
The robot should be integral to the story and not just set dressing, with it showing up at least 5 minutes per episode with maybe one pilot development episode with only a minute or two of the mecha. The mecha should also look cool.

Pilot(s) who are interesting and get developed, but don't end up the type that is constantly out of his mecha to the point it may as well just be a drama that happens to have mechs in it.

The pilot to be hotblooded, or if it's a team at least one hotblooded pilot. If it's a team also make their personalities play off each other well. Mecha shows with no hotblooded pilots shouldn't exist.

tldr Cool mecha that are the a centerpiece of the show with hotblooded and interesting pilots
>>
>>15164297
>what is MOST important
The fights, naturally. The more related the choreography is with regards to the circumstances of the battle, the better. Dodge around scaffolding, trip some motherfucker trying to shank you, punch the headcam, reversals when someone tries a grapple.

>and what should ABSOLUTELY STAY THE FUCK OUT
Too much of anything, honestly.

Eg.: People love to watch a good shutdown. I don't mind some "I fight to protect those dear to me" cheezbites but when the bad guy talks about politics and economics that would seemingly benefit others if they were implemented, have the main character occasionally question those points instead of using dialogue that seems to dodge around it entirely.
>>
>>15164297
>MOST important
Good robot design, Good Story, Good Setting
>ABSOLUTELY STAY THE FUCK OUT
Even though it is a pretty major trope, pilots should be 16+. If they're not adults they should only be pilots if they're a prodigy or if there's a shortage of pilots and they really need more. If its the latter then pilot should act like a rookie starting out.
>>
>>15164297
>what should ABSOLUTELY STAY THE FUCK OUT
Gary Stus. Self-inserts. Good guys/bad guys dichotomy. Mecha upgrades every several episodes. Characters that are introduced only to sell the plastic shit they pilot.
>>
I want writers to stop pretending that the show they're writing are more than just shitty giant robot cartoons for children.

Looking at most Gundam series. If you can't write believable drama and politics, fuck off and just give us giant robot action non stop. Dumb Japs don't understand how the world works, so they should stop trying and instead focus on what they do best.

Too many series are ruined by pathetically bad writing that only anime fags and man children find good.
>>
>>15164404
This. Super robots is the only way the industry can move forward.

I always found it retarded that some fags want drama and politics even if it's garbage in an attempt to deal with the fact that they're watching dumb children cartoons. It's especially true with realism fags. They're in denial and insecure over their tastes.
>>

>>
>>15165972

there's a good past, however, so if anything we need it to move BACKwards
>>
>>15165982
Towards better series mainly, with the additional goal of doing better monetarily. Of course, from an objective standpoint, the other way around is more important, but that doesn't matter much in this scenario.

>>15165987
What do you propose we do then?
>>
stay away from anything in Gundam: that franchise has it's ropes/needs cornered....
>>
>>15164297
Namaniku drew this, right?
>>
>>15164404
Giant robots aren't enough by themselves. I need to be invested in the pilots and what it is they're fighting for.
>>
>>15167569
Yeah. Cool mechs for no reason doesn't go anywhere. There has to be story, which means conflict.

>>15164297
Most important is big robots doing something that requires big robots to do. There should be a reason they're fighting space battles in Gundams rather than TIE fighters. "This is cooler" is a reason, but it needs to be addressed directly to make it legit.

To avoid: lazy writing. Tedious justifications, forced character development, romances for marketability reasons, drama for the sake of drama, face-heel or heel-face turns, and anyone being a princess. We've all seen these done well, and we've all seen them done badly. I would say better a bad story than none, but that's what a bad story is on a functional level: no story at all.

You know what I could watch? Something like a Giant Robot tank crew. Just three or four guys, basic enlisted grunts, doing their jobs and hanging out with each other because in a barracks you don't have much choice. Annoying each other, trying not to annoy each other, eating, sleeping, showering, video chatting with girlfriends back home, that sort of thing. If there needs to be plot, one of them gets killed, maybe on duty, maybe not. Then the others have to deal with it. Guilt, anger, drinking, crying, throwing themselves into work they used to avoid. Maybe they get past it, maybe it stays unresolved.
>>
>>15167783
So you want a military Patlabor but with the pilot crew from Daiguard?
>>
>>15164297
>what is MOST important
Giant robots that fight, defined as things that are giant and are robots and also fight.

If said giant robots fight, it must mean that there are things fighting the giant robots, probably things that are giant or robots - possibly giant robots - and that fight.

>what should ABSOLUTELY STAY THE FUCK OUT
Things that aren't giant, aren't robots, aren't fighting, and aren't functional and subordinate to the appearance on the screen of what is gigantic, robotic and fighting.

Giant robots that fight are in the story not because there is a conflict, there are characters building and piloting them, etc.

The conflict, characters, etc. are in the story because giant robots can fight.

>what is the best in a mecha series?
Giant robots that fight.
>>
>>15167569
If you think they aren't enough by themselves, it usually means you're not a mecha nerd.

The best shows I enjoyed are usually the ones with the coolest action scenes and they're usually not more than 13 episodes long. I only accept mecha shows with much plot if said plot is actually well written, and in most cases it isn't.

Otherwise the plot should be bare bones and only exist to serve the action. Plot is why ttgl went from a cool little show to an insufferable holier than thou garbage in the second half.

Of course, and you can do this without hamfisted attempts at drama that require every character to act incredibly stupidly to work, laughable "social commentary" that just comes across as idiot preaching or forced formulaic attempts at romantic tension that people could only possibly care about because they've picked out a waifu. If you can't write for shit, maybe don't try things that require writing skills to not be awful and just stick to making a simple fun show. It's a genre for children, no one will criticize you for it.

How would this place not be better if people just talked about what they actually liked and there weren't Getter Robo threads filled with racial slurs and 30 "Zeta sucks" threads? How would this place not be better if people didn't recycle stale memes and actually put some thought into their posts?

This isn't idealism, it's realism.
>>
>>15172005
Do you actually bother reading the shit you type before you post, or do you just vomit it out and assume it's fine? Nothing would change if people did what you said, and it's not like there's anything wrong with what you mentioned anyway.
>>
>>15172025
What? I honestly have absolutely no clue what you're talking about, it's as if you responded to the wrong post.

What would change would be that if people wanted to talk about Getter Robo they would, and people who didn't like Getter Robo wouldn't. What would change would be that there wouldn't be 30 "Zeta sucks" threads on the front page of /m/ that people made because it's the hilarious new thread to currently make until another show catches on. What would change would be that instead of calling someone a "nigger" for liking a different robot than them, they just wouldn't post at all.

Are you seriously going to defend that kind of behavior?
>>
>>15164297
