Dougram is a precursor to VOTOMS through and through. Plus, it's basically what spawned Battletech or visible mech cockpits styled after helicopters.
If you're in any way a fan of western mecha, you probably don't want to miss out on that one.

Starship Troopers is another timeless classic. If you haven't read the book and may be thinking it's all about Zergs and Imperial Guard squaring it off, let me correct you. Starship Troopers is the originator of real robo altogether. Gundams are called mobile suits because the stuff Rico uses in the book is called a mobile suit.
It has it all, it's beautifully animated and it is Japanese farewell to the author of the series who'd died the same year.
