Well, he succeeded. Despite a somewhat goofy start Devilman is a pretty successful series. I think it accomplishes what it tries rather well, though I've honestly never loved the Ryo/Satan twist specifically.

Devilman is worth reading, even if it's just so you can see how much it influenced stuff that came after it. But yes, it's pretty good.
