How would you write Voltron into the Transformers universe?

I'm assuming it has to be piloted.
If not just 5 maximals who combine

An ancient race of extremely human like aliens discovered the body of a long dead Maximal/predicon/what ever you call animal transfromers now days combiner. It was made from 5 lions. The Anceint creators found five golden disks of great power to bring power but not life into the robots. They adapt from their beast form and aren't able to keep their original transformations. Eventually they add cockpits to control the five lions.

Come on man, you could have come up with some fan fiction this generic on your own.

They'll be brought in as the Vol-Cons or maybe the Go-Lion-Bots. Much like how Hasbro pretty much did with the original Transformers toyline. Takara might go with a Brainmaster type deal.

Unless you mean they have the right to use the name Voltron/Go-Lion, meaning they got the IP itself and not just the toy design. But they've no rights to the animation as that's done by some other company.

In which case, assuming the original pilots are off limits, I would imagine that IDW will turn all the lions into robo-lesbians while a Hasbro funded TV series will treat them as semi-feral "Maximals".

It can't be that hard. If Dynamite can bullshit Robotech/Voltron. IDW could do it easily.

If we talking IDW-verse, they could be Maximals from the colony world Eukaris

For a G1 show origins, just do what they did with the Protectobots and have them just show up. And make them the Autobot counterpart to the Predacon combiner team.

They were originally gonna be Autobots in The Movie called Anibots. Then changed to Anicons, that premise of animal transformers got dropped in the movie. And finally got reworked into the Predacons for season 3.

Make him a combine robot with his own mind. He has authority issues and cannot see eye to eye with Optimus, and it gets worst whenever he screws up. His best friend happens to be the Autobot who "nurses" the robots back into "health" after the battles (the Autobot doctor, so to say). Voltron hates humans because of reasons; they pollute nature and are unable to live in harmony with their environment or some shit like that. He ends up meeting the 5 human pilots because of reasons. They all empathize and he learns to respect humans. He becomes an incredible warrior and gains Optimus' respect as the series progresses. Something happens. He sacrifices his life in an heroic way and S1 (or first arc or whatever) ends. Everyone mourns him and at the same time rejoice because his sacrifice saved their lives.

Enter S2 (or second arc or whatever). There's a dire situation and suddenly Voltron appears. How? Enter a flashback where he requests to his Autobot friend (the doctor) that his body is to be wielded as a weapon by the same humans who showed him that our kind is worth protecting. Optimus is reluctant at first because he had a new appreciation of Voltron even before he died, but eventually accepts it because it was his wish; the humans prove themselves to him as well. Leave some clues here and there that there is some kind of sentiency in the robot; like ending a fight with the pilots ko'ed, shit like that. Pretty much in the spirit of Evangelion and how Eva 1 did some things that didn't make sense until later. But leave it there. Just introduce the idea. When asked about it, the Autobot doctor (his friend) changes the subject or gives vague responses.

Enter S3 (or third arc or whatever). Last part of Voltron's story. Shit goes on with Earth's government, and they confiscate the robot because of reasons (bureaucracy or simply they desire to have a kick-ass weapon). The humans scatters and go back to daily, menial lives, but still in touch with the Autobots. But it turns out that no one can pilot Voltron. It's as if the robot refuses to start. Turns out there is some kind of sentiency there, a leftover of his spark or some shit like that, as the Autobot robot explains. At the end the responsibility of helping Optimus save the day falls to the 5 humans again, with their hopes renewed because they feel Voltron's presence as they fight. You can either find a way to "resurrect" him at the end or you can leave him as some kind of a vague mystic presence in the robot; be it as it may, the future looks better because Earth has Voltron as its champion.
