Is debatable, but there was that one episode where we think he is going to sacrifice himself in the control room to open the portal, by getting evaporated in the process, so Kodai starts to lose it and cry only to Sanada to come out fine of a water pond.

Yamato was the first anime to attempt a more complex, overarching structure. There are bound to be a few hangups because no one really knew how to successfully do that sort of thing back then.

It's also not uncommon to have the Yamato receive severe damage that includes entire sections being blown away and then have it back in perfect condition in the next episode.

It's way less silly than the original. In the original he ends up pinned against a wall by his arms and legs(I forget the exact circumstances). He then shares a story about how he got in a roller coaster crash as a kid. Because of the crash his arms and legs are all prosthetic and can be removed. They then remove his arms and legs and carry him back to the ship. This accident and the fact his limbs are prosthetic is never mentioned or referenced ever again.

Crustacean Assault Craft Deathvatator**

But, deprive us from seeing again the diversity of cool ship designs of the EDF, like the battleships, destroyers, cruisers and carriers, to instead make an entire fleet of Andromeda's and variants? I mean, ok, it is more plausible that not only the EDF would not be able to build a enormous fleet with a range of diversified ships in only three years, but also that they would concentrate efforts in building the fleet over one single class so to facilitate training and repair. But personally I would still miss the other ships.

Yeah, in the remake Susumu and Juzo were bff almost 2 minutes after they met each other. In the original it took a lot of time and it was more gradual.
Also, Dessler is a lot better in the original. He, like Earthlings, is fighting for survival. In the remake he's completely flanderized and boring.
The fact is, the original Yamato revolutionized animation in Japan. It was a breaking point. Not only because it showed producers that making an investment into an adult science fiction anime was profitable, but it was also the starting point of what later was known as otaku culture, which was cemented with Gundam a few years later. The sequel, although done with care an very professionally, is just another attempt to milk a franchise. And despite the shortcomings from the original series, all in all the sequel isn't as good. It's easier to watch, though.

Imperial guard uniforms are pure grey. His looks more like the Navy's color, though much lighter.
