I didn't, since I was just going off a quick glance at the thumbnail and that fight at least implies for a short time that both died. The Impulse v Freedom fight doesn't even imply that Shinn died, so a "they both actually died" thing makes less sense.

That out of the way, it still makes no real sense, since Athrun was already against Shinn fighting Kira and fairly antagonistic to Shinn and ZAFT's actions, so Kira dying isn't going to cause him to double down on ZAFT faith for some reason.

Nor is Lacus likely to go genocidal when her actual boyfriend dies if, again, she didn't do so when her father was murdered and she was younger.

Not really. If a group makes it their explicit raison d'etre, the purpose for which they gather and fight then it doesn't even have to be proved, because they've said it themselves. And people do it all the time. The IRA/IRB, ISIS etc. Extremist groups gather to reject peace because they feel let down by it or the representatives who brokered it regularly.

How is that any different? One of their first actions in the One Year War is to drop a colony. They only gassed a few as far as we know, and one of the earliest, if not the earliest reason was to facilitate a colony drop and make taking control of the colony easier. Unless you mean dropping more colonies. In which case it's really just Gundam X.

He'd be called a Gary Sue and compared to Kira. I practically guarantee it. Not that he is a Gary Sue, but someone in a stock unit that's not even that well put together beating much better built and customised units simply because he's a better fighter, rather than because we see him put n any more work or whatever, which is essentially what you're suggesting, will not sit well with a lot of people. I'd prefer Sekai or Shimon be changed to be a more compelling character, with more detail in hiow they win personally, over just picking one character over another and the writing remaining just as basic and stupid.

Also, Gyanko sucks just as much as any other Try girl. Appealing to your fetish instead of a different one doesn't make her better.

You know, I can kind of see it. Shinji was already pretty effeminate in his mannerism anyway. It adds more stress to his interpersonal relationships, and gives Mistato and Asuka even more opportunities to tease him. So it makes Shinji's life worse, which is the #1 condition for any Eva plot point.

And its gives Gainax another waifu to self merch for.

The only question is whether becoming a girl sends Shinji into a dysfunctional breakdown even faster, or if after he gets used to it he ends up better off?

Would have been a better story twist/curveball direction to take Rebuild 3 in than a 14 year timeskip where no one ages.

So Misato teases Shinji about the change, but it also forces her to pay attention to him more instead of only thinking about herself and her work. This gives Shinji a shoulder to cry on, and boy will he need one.

Asuka probably bullies Shinji mercilessly. Even more so since Misato expects her to be Shinji's babysitter and girl-life coach.

Rei doesn't treat Shinji any differently. Different body, but still the same soul.

Gendo is, if anything, even more reserved and refuses to even look at Shinji. If he couldn't stand to be near his son because he reminded him of Yui before, this is ten times worse.

Touji and Kensuke probably act exactly how you would expect they would.

Probably the most interesting thing is that this screws with his emotional state so much it might change the outcome of Third Impact. If he goes super depressed about becoming a girl, then when Third Impact roles around his wish might be to return to how he used to be instead of making everyone go away. Or if becoming a girl ends up making him a happier person in the long run then he might not be such a sad sack that he causes instrumentality. Either way he probably has bigger problems than his hedgehogs dillemma now.
