It's more sane to think of each show as having its own canon that includes the show itself plus whatever else it chooses to acknowledge, rather than trying to fit everything into a master timeline or something like a goddamn autist.

On the other hand series that do have long coherent continuities become intimidating, seemingly impenetrable to someone trying to get into them.

Most UC entries don't change anything really, not beyond a nebulous "the Federation became weaker" anyways. Not even Zeta or Char's Counterattack change anything beyond that. Every new UC entry bar ZZ starts off with the Federation as a dominant power and some assholes in space rebelling against causing a war ostensibly because they want self-governance while really it's just because they want to be the new top dog and replace the Federation, and by the end every one of them has been defeated and leaves no real mark on the setting or changes it in any way.

It's not actually any kind of hard work to arrange the UC entries canonically. And most of the non-UC entries make themselves obvious AUs from the off so there's no point trying to arrange them canonical to UC, regardless of what Tomino or Bandai say. The only ones that cause any kind of problem are Turn-A and G-Reco, both of which are so distant both from UC and each other that arranging them has no problem beyond "which do I prefer to put first?" Yes I know Tomino gave an opinion on it, but he also told people to make up their own mind in the same sentence, so he probably doesn't care and no-one else at Bandai or Sunrise appears to either.
