I think the rationale is that with a very small handful of exceptions the show committed to prove that Gjallarhorn is captained by a crew of fools, and so Iok, as the Chief Idiot, is therefore best equipped to move the plot along.

The moment Iok refused to lower the bridge I fully expected him to die an ironic death.
When Amida charged in his direction I expected her to crash into the bridge, but that didn't happen.
When the Hammerhed charged in his direction I expected it to shave off the ship's bridge, but that didn't happen.

They like every other faction have taken the story of the Crescent moon, of the UC world and have twisted it to their own ideology and act on that. Did G Reco did a good job of expanding on that idea? I'd say that's a flaw of G Reco (being rushed), but there were thematic reasons for their existence. The characters of Venus Globe were following the ideology that Kia and G-IT crafted for them.

The real threat seems to be the consequence debt that Tekkadan keeps racking up. The series seems to be building up to a conclusion where all of Gjallahorn descends upon Tekkadan at once, 200 ships to their two, and hundreds of MS to their ~15. Then we watch as 75% of the cast bites it. Hopefully.
