What shows do I need to watch to have a credible /m/ card?

No such thing. A lot of people on here don't even watch the shows they complain about.

GaoGaiGar. Then GaoGaiGar FINAL. Then some toku; Kamen Rider BLACK is a personal favorite, and the same goes for W and Fourze. Sentai has a broader variety of tastes, but if you like G Gundam, GekiRanger is as good a place to start as any. Maybe try Shinkenger after that.

I'd say this chart is one of the best ones I've seen. I'd add Ideon, Dangaioh and Dunbine.
I don't know whether if FLCL and Cowboy Bebop are considered mecha, but I'd definitively watch them regardless. And I've been told that Astroboy 2003 is an excellent anime, but I haven't seen it to be honest.
Evangelion is a must nevertheless. And if you want to scratch Ultraman's surface, I've seen "Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy" and I really liked it (the help that it features Ultras from many generation helps).

Ordian was actually not that bad, if only graphics were not so budget. Cybuster started interesting with all those post-apocalyptic backgrounds and underwater utility real robots. Pilote Candidate had cute catgirl engineer. MD Geist is a fine example of 80's hot garbage but nevertheless entertaining

The founders of mecha we're pretty much: Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Mobile Suit Gundam.
Some more popular ones with casual anime fans: Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, and Evangelion.
Popular Gundam shows for casual anime fans: Gundam Seed, Gundam 00, Gundam Unicorn, and one of the most recent ones: Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans!

I would say watch them and form your own opinion, don't listen to what others say about it.
