The middle and end were another director so you really can disregard the things you don't understand about the first few episodes. New combined Benkei and Musashi, it also rewrote Michiru's character. It's just a better intro to Ryoma, Hayato, (because they just got more screen time)and having a stable team of 3 since Armageddon uses several pilots. The OVA as a whole is good, if it's better or worse than Armageddon is up to personal preference.

Stinger and Cohen are both repurposed mad scientists from Ishikawa's other manga Majuu Sensen, here they are just other renowned Getter ray specialists line Saotome is. Armageddon has a lot of little nods to everything Ishikawa made, the way Ryoma is dressed is also how the protagonist in Majuu Sensen is dressed.

Saotome was infected by the invaders, he became infected when he examined Michiru's corpse which was infected (the reason she killed herself in the "accident"). Saotomes attempts to cure himself and ward off the invaders were becoming twisted as the infection made him crazier, he was thinking I believe to potentially infect everyone and fight fire with fire. Hayato finding out about the infection anger Saotome going crazy, he kills Saotome. Because Ryoma showed up and thought he was a witness, Hayato decided to frame him so he could stay out of prison and come up with a plan for the invaders. He also knows Ryoma is a hothead and a liability for a plan like this.

Hayato has always been conniving, and they made him still evil for drama and further plot twist.

By four episodes in I only was starting to get warmed up to the characters, their plights, and where things were going. It's not even that, it's more like Imagawa was building towards something so the characters took a backseat to the plot and the mystery, much like GR did until about ep 4. Then he got canned and Jun Kawagoe was put in charge.

Now I think Kawagoe did a fantastic job considering he was just thrown in the driver's seat out of nowhere and had to just work with what he was given, but you can tell that the first 3 episodes were trying to be something different than normal Getter, and everything after is just what most people think of when they think of Getter.

The quality is better and so is the audio balance, but it's missing the cheese, overacting and the insane invader noises (which were added) from the dub.

Except that is false. Everything you need to know is explained you get plenty of little character moments too initiate you into this world but most of the past is treated as a mystery so it leaves many things vague. The only problem with the first 3 episodes is Imagawa has a preference for break neck speed pacing do things can happen a bit too fast and I can understand a bit of confusion since it doesn't give you any information you don't need.

If you go back to that one scene towards the end with ghost/illusion Michiru talking to both of them, she guilt trips Ryouma, but gets really saucy with Hayato. It's kinda implied that the illusions were all targeting them specifically, so it seems to me Ryouma just felt horrible about being involved in his friend's death.

Shin Poseidon has a mace and a giant fap hand the size of its body, it also has a massive face, and it has two tank treads that should be useless by all logic given how fucking massive it is. I liked it but I can agree it's a weaker episode outside the final 2 scenes. I did like that this was the "wake up call" for the Neo Getter team to realize that they can't save everyone, and they need to become like Ryoma/the older war hardened pilots and realize the invaders will do ANYTHING to win. This episode taught them both how dire a situation the surface world is, how much of a threat the invaders pose to peace, and that they will have to make the harsh calls to save who can be saved while accepting some can't be saved. They aren't heroes, this is war and they cannot be careless.

This episode also taught the Neo team that puppies cannot work advanced technology.

Besides it being a homage to Jinmen, I really didn't get the impression that those people were still themselves. In most other instances, once someone is assimilated by the invaders their consciousness seemed to go with everything else, like that group of figureheads who become monstrous parodies of their former selves. If anything I assumed they were just trying to use the imagery of helpless hostages to their advantage, perhaps because they sensed vulnerability in the new Getter team.
A lot like that time in Dragonball Z where Cell tries to pretend 17 is still conscious to trick 18.

In the manga the Getter Robo for Getter Robo Go is just called Getter Robo. Neo is the best name offered for this Getter that isn't powered by Getter rays, even though it was never used in the manga because the manga didn't give it a distinct name. They were already dead, absorbed by the Invaders. At the absolute best they were stuck in eternal suffering, not able to do anything, but it's far more likely that they were literally all dead at that point and the Invader was trying to psyche him out.

Ryoma made the objectively right choice, they even bring this up later in the episode. They don't trust him immediately (even once they know it's Ryoma) because he's clearly being violent as fuck, but he's actively killing the Invaders and never does anything to things that aren't Invaders so he's definitely a good guy.
