The focus on (mostly the later parts) an an over all focused arc, with the war I assume. Really I don't know what would draw them in over other treks. (Especially since elsewhere in the world the debate is usually between ToS, TNG and Deep Space 9 and it's usually pretty equal from all sides)

I've heard Japan doesn't really care for Star Trek all that much, so DS9's different approach to the setting could have won them over.

The Magnificent Ferengi is one of my favorite episodes of all Trek. The Ferengi DS9 eps were all really fun.

From what I've heard, TOS was quickly cancelled back in the 70s due to poor ratings. TNG was popular when it aired, so they tried to air TOS again but people treated it as a TNG-ripoff.

Is it just me or is Sisko just unlucky/shit at captaining the Defiant? Everytime he takes the Defiant out for anything more than a standard milk run either something extremely weird happens and/or they both get their shit pushed in. Much like how O'Brien has the Universe, it seems like Sisko has the Defiant as his conduit to suffering.

Dax, Kira, heck even Worf had a better win-loss record, so to speak.
