Sure, but it doesn't match Bleach or Naruto that much. There's always a demon or powerful entity inside them that they draw power from that also ties them to some historical figure. Domon just uses good old willpower and is more similar to a sports shounen because it basically is one with tournament style combat. G Gundam is a lot more cheesy and doesn't prolong the plot with DRAMA

I think as it is currently IBO is generic shonen, but it uses the standard tropes in ways to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. It's like one of those games that take the standard cliches of it's genre and goes "hey, this is really fucked up if you think about it. You, the player are just going along with this? What does that really say about you?"

Now, whether this is what they intended or just an unexpected by-product of the writing is completely up to debate.
