A state can be authoritarian without being fascist. Theoretically a state could have a more capitalist economy while the power to create legislation, interpret legislation, and enforce legislation are all in the hands of one entity.

The Saudi Kingdom is probably an example of this sort of system. The King has final say (and the Wahhabs, but with the ongoing reforms and Vision 2030 it seems like the throne is trying to distance itself from the Wahhabs) on governance, but capitalism exists.

As an authoritarian regime you have to maintain legitimacy through some means. Whether it's like the Sauds buying support through subsidies or the Kims ruling through fear of punishment and encouraging paranoia.

I don't think Char necessarily liked using cyber newtypes, he's just very willing to make sacrifices to what he sees as the ultimate greater good, sacrifices of his own or sacrificing others for it.

Char Aznable's/Casval Deikun's father Zeon Deikun was the leader of the Side that would become the principality of Zeon. He's murdered by the Zabi family who then starts the One Week War, where a few colonies are gassed and a lot of civilians are killed. Then in order to end the war as quickly as possible Zeon commenced Operation British (the colony drop intended to hit Jaburo). Then the Antarctic Treaty happens (banning CBRN weapons) and Zeon decides to invade the Earth kicking of the OYW.

No, it's completely stupid because they just let Zeon build an army right under their nose. The point of Operation British was to eradicate Federation military command in Jaburo, not just lower morale they missed.
