If it makes you feel any better, MechaGodzilla is one of the more popular (top four) and reoccurring characters in the franchise. Then there's the other cyborgs or robots like Mogerua, Jet Jaguar, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Gigan, and Megalon. Anno of NGE fame wrote/directed a Godzilla film (which is basically the closest thing we'll be getting to a live-action Eva for a while) just last year. And what does it matter to you that Godzilla is on /m/? Such matters are usually contained within a single board at a time.

Finally saw it in Barcelona last night in a theater with only 6 people on it. A couple of thoughts:

-4th form's first sequence was a rollercoaster (you know which one). Damn intense.

-The bureaucratic satire is a refreshing viewpoint, but I left with the sensation of not completely getting Japan's zeitgeist (I wouldn't know the TV Asashi jab if not for reading it)
Also, the brief moment where two economists talking of where Godzilla should attack to save Japan's economy caught me off-guard, that was damn dark.

-The film tries hard to explain EVERYTHING about Godzilla: Teeth, behaviour, dorsal fins, square/cube law... The origami scene left us scatterbrained for its massive infodump.

-I felt unconfortable with the "rewriting the constitution" military subtext in light of recent events. It reminds me on how The Wind Rises got lambasted by left/right-wing politicians for not taking a clear side.
Also, the first "don't shoot" scene is cringeworthy.

GF liked the film's composition, the retro homages (vintage music, puppet-ish movement) and Godzilla's unsubtle Fukushima parallels, specifically noticing how it just left a drag mark instead of traditional footprints. I also liked the bureaucratic POV, LOUD SFX and how massive the film felt, with its million characters and camera viewpoints. As somebody said, it's practically the anti-Great Man Theory film.

Overall, it's not perfect, but it's easily one of the best Kaiju films we'll ever get.

Yeah, it's very briefly mentioned that its 1st form was underwater (The "it might be a whale or dinosaur... Or even fake footage" form).
I'm not sure of the scene in question, but I think the hypothetical 5th form was mentioned ("It might reproduce or even grow wings", or something like that)

True. I've stayed away of these threads so I wasn't aware the movie followed so closely the original. Goji just walking slowly in a straight line wrecking everything while the Godzilla March plays in the background was amazing.

It's not so much about the nationalism (Which is justified in this film with the whole international cooperation thing, other Godzilla films rank much worse in that regard), it's about the unfortunate fact that the film devotes time to showing Japan's constitution rewritten to let more leeway to the army when the exact same thing is happening on real life without trying to make a commentary on it, unlike the politicians' harsh satire.
The only bad thing said about militarizing Japan is a line by Yaguchi basically saying "Hey, just don't get too Imperial Japan, ok?"

Then again, it's a giant monster movie, of course the fucking army will try to kill the beast. In real life you wouldn't try to talk with it.
Anyway, this debate is highly controversial and I loved the film anyway, so I'll get over it. Here's another bunch of comments:

-I find noticeable how after 50 years of Godzilla films, they managed to make its atomic breath the defining moment in the latest films. In G'14 it's the crowd pleasing moment, like a boxing match's comeback moment. In Shin, it's more of an awe-inspiring scene where the crowd goes silent: you know shit's gonna get real bad.

-Japanese humor is weird. The shower comment got a few forced laughs, while others fared better (The new PM's "Sure, whatever, I just want to eat", or the butt-licker aide's "Just get me to vice president, ok?")
Looking back at it, it's definitely funny in a very subdued way.

-I didn't get the whole politician-journalist deal subplot. As I understood, the politician got info from Goro Maki and the journalist got confidential information. Is that it?

-So... Goro Maki = Godzilla, right? That's the only justification for it's attack on Tokyo (Pic related)

Another spaniard who watched the movie yesterday here.
It was FUCKING GREAT, I though the CGI was going to be pretty crappy because of the budget, and HOLY SHIT THE FIRST LASER BEAM SCENE.

What are people waiting for to watch it? Was the international/ american version censored, or the blu-ray will be better?

My only complains are the two forced sexy female characters (the ara ara christmas cake politician, and the ENGRISH speaking, totally american, ever gloss wearing girl).

BTW, did the film took Godzilla VS Destoroyah as direct reference? Because this Godzilla is a literal fusion of Destoroyah and the Godzilla version of that movie (with the red body, and having to cool it down to stop it).

Yeah, the final scene reminded me a lot of Destoroyah being made of a ton of smaller organisms. Actually, is Shin Goji supposed to be a bunch of creatures covered by skin, or was that just the tip of the tail?

The only decent quality version is missing 20 mins. I have it downloaded and watched some scenes, but it's not complete so why even bother. Even the editing is shit, sometimes the music just cuts off.

Personally, I think this is the reason for how the rapid evolutions looked; Goro's hatred for Japan took over an apparently harmless if useful creature and warped it into a horrible monster capable of only destruction and pain, thus we go from Kamata-kun (who is actually kinda adorable) to the the mountain of ugly that is Kamakura-san.

This also creates sequel potential with the Zillermen, as they could very well have the personality/souls of Goro-zilla's absorbed victims.

I just came from seeing the movie in Spanish subs, It was OK, but damn it drag, It felt longer than Edwardzilla despite the shorter length, how does one do that?

CGI was hookey, above super Sentai CGI but it showed that they were rushing out to get it time, shame there was only 3 shots were I could tell it was practical and sometimes, the CGI looked decent, but then again there was frame blending on my theater, and since it's all digital projections now, I hate that films now look soft compared to old film projections, which yeah had print damage due to wear of the print, but I miss that film grain and sharpness.

I know the movie was dubbed here in Spanish, but much to my surprise we got it dubbed.

From what I know, yes, it was dubbed, but seems that only a few CINEMEX's got that version, and they are non specific about it, in my ticket they said Spanish, which I presumed it's for dubbed films, since they usually said Subtitled when it's otherwise, but nope, we got to saw it Subtitled, more so, it was the actual Japanese version of the film, not that mess of a over note subs from Funimation, in fact, there was no mention of Funimation everywhere in marketing, THAT was such a treat!.

Only thing was that they altered the opening title with that cheap sony vegas "Shin godzilla" title with that cheap godzilla font, heck, it was supposed to be called "Godzilla Resurge" back when they planned to release it in november, shame couldn't been earlier since it was my birthday that month.

Also there were no japanese descriptions during the movie either, but the ending credits were in full japanese.

Funny how there was no mention of Funimation aftwerwards, maybe the mexican distribuitors managed to ditch them and get it directly from Toho?, maybe?

I suppose the delay was due to them making a dub for it.

It's too soon to tell, but I can tell you that in Spain's 2nd best-selling cinema, literally nobody went to see it on opening day (And I know that because I changed cinema at the last minute). With a week-long release in only 61 cinemas... Honestly, I think it will be a flop. It doesn't help that it's been already shown a couple of months ago on major film festivals, die-hard fans might have already seen it. At least it's being well-received by critics, although it's funny that the harshest reviews I've read are from a spanish Godzilla fanpage.

At least you got some advertising. I only found out it was shown here in Toledo thanks to the internet. In the theater you can only find it as part of a list of movies from the Sitges Festival; just a name in a sheet of paper. No poster, no nothing.

Just watched the Ghidorah movie, i'ts fun but kinda silly when the monsters are talking with each other. I felt that the princess plot was kinda lost, just to fill story.
