Waiting for the show to start
X and Ginga S are pretty good.
The dub is pretty atrocious though, especially the Ginga one.
>>15112524
I heard they made the Ginga S film shorter?
>>15108779
Yeah sometimes they really nail it, like in the Baltan episode or the Mummy one. Although sometimes the flight scenes might be a little too long.
>>15112559
Did they really now. I thought the film had some bits missing.
The script wasn't anything to write home about to begin with, but the dub really made the movie feel awkward
>>15112858
You can thank William Winckler for that, his methods haven't really evolved since the 70s.
>>15112925
The voices sucked too
Zero sounds like some 30 year old veteran
Rena's voice was really really bad
Mana sounds like a eunuch
I don't even want to remember any of the other ones
>>15112611
I've got to about a third of the series. Its not for me but those monster beatdowns are the ones keeping me interested.
Hey guys, I watched some of the old stuff and kinda wanted to get into the new series. How much continuity do they have? Do I need to watch Ginga, X and Orb in order or can I just pick one and start?
>>15113398
Ginga and Ginga S, X, and Orb are all in there seperate continuities I guess. It's kind of hard to identify continuities. The Ultras do cross over with eachother, except for Orb, but they come from different universes. So the characters just universe-hop from one show to another. I never finised Ginga and didn't watch Ginga S, But I was totally fine watching X. TL;DR past ultras do show up, but there is there is no problem jumping into a series like X or Orb if you don't want to watch the previous ones.
So Gai already know Asuka/Dyna. So what is the backstory of Gai?
>>15114072
It seemed more like he just knew of him rather than knowing him personally like the crew of the Pendragon in Ultra Galaxy Legend.
>>15113398
>>15113831
Showa stuff, Max, Mebius, Zero are all one verse
Tiga and Dyna are one verse
Next Nexus are one verse
The rest are all different verses and Zero travels to them with Noa hax aegis
This was pretty much the picture until Ginga fucked it all up again and now we don't know where Ginga, X and Orb lies in the picture.
Although since Zero came to X and Ginga and Victory came to X, they are probably separate verses as well, with Ginga and X being neighbors and farther from the main m78 verse

>>15118743

Anyone knows where I can see Ultraman Dyna and Gaia ?
>>15119304
Japan.
- We need the entire population of the Land of Light to send Zero to another universe
- We have Noa's gear to give Zero a free ticket to travel between multiverse
- Suddenly Leo and Seven can magically travel around to give Zero a hand
- We suddenly have Dyna and Cosmos who can travel between multiverse on their own
- Hikari can do dimentional shift to another universe suddenly
- We then see there is Star Gates which comes from nowhere that makes traveling so freaking easy for the Ultras
They sure are making things run by magic

It's more of an anthological series than anything else, it's easier to enjoy once you realise this.
But yes, Baltan is based.

I screwed my watching enjoyment of Ultraman 66. I started watching it and was having a good time but then I got curious and watched Orb. I ended up loving Orb and now returning to UM66 it feels so much worse than what I have grown to enjoy that I'm having trouble going trough it. Hopefully Ultraseven is way better.

>Was Orb considered a succesful series?
We'll know in a few months when Field's financial statements are released.
>>15126241
There are plenty in Japanese.
It looks like they invested their money better in Orb than in X. The kaijus in X look really cheap oppossed to Orb's. Guess they ran out of money when they pimped out the car and truck for Xio.
The Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco is showing a double-feature of Ultraman X and Ultraman Ginga S films later this morning. I haven't seen either modern Ultra series, are they tripe or worth seeing on the big screen?
>>15134109
I went to the showing in Chicago
The dub is pretty cringey for my taste and they make some head scratching translation choices, but the movie themselves more than make up for the faults. Definitely worth going.
Both movies will rely on your knowledge of the TV show to get the full enjoyment, but you can still have a lot of fun
>>15129459
It experienced a huge upswing in streaming ratings, but like all toku, the real measure of success is toy sales, which we don't know yet.

>>15137282

>tfw no Ultra Mama of your own
I'm like halfway through Orb right now and I'm REALLY impressed. It has the same great camera-work, toku effects, kaiju costumes and choreography from Ultra X. The premise is also one rare instance where it's not centered around a variation of a science patrol team. And that Thunder Breaster, light/dark conflict thing, WOW.
What worries me about future Ultras though, is whether they'll make any new ones that stand alone. Every new incarnation is a KR Decade now. At one point you'll just get into some ridiculous situation where Ultraman John summons the power of Ultraman Dick who summons the power of Ultraman Harry who is the third kid of Ultraman Thomas who is a reboot of Ultraman Thomas 202X who is the disciple of Ultraman George...how far can it go down the line?
I need some advice from fellow anons.
Started watching an Ultraman series for the first time (Orb), after seeing several Rider series (Kuuga, Agito, ZO & Drive being my favs. Currently watching and enjoying Gaim). I'm currently at ep 12.
Now here's the thing: I really liked the first few episodes: I think the SFX are endearing and the monsters were fun to watch since they felt different from one another and Ultraman found different ways to defeat them. The actors do a fine job (better than some other toku series I've watched) and I think the villain is charismatic in a smug way.
But I started to get bored by it really fast: the last good episode was that kaiju that was poisoning the water and since then everything became stale: the fights are rinse & repeat and Ultraman transforms many times through a single episode (and they don't shorten the sequence at all); kaijus stopped having a distinct identity and the protagonist knowing only one song in the harmonica is really annoying. But the one thing that bothers me the most is that they've yet to explain the cards concept in-universe: even Decade made a stronger point and that series isn't well written.
Should I keep watching or try a different Ultraman series? I really like the myth and I can deal with silly humor/rubber suits...but I need to have either a decent plot or more imaginative fights. I've heard Orb was really good so maybe Ultraman isn't for me ? Oh, I'm also really enjoying the manga by the linebarrels authors.
>>15138710
Ultraman almost never have an over arching plot. The show is basically Twilight Zone with the people in different situations. Only show with an arching plot is Nexus and maybe Cosmos, so yeah, maybe the show is not quite the fit for you.
>>15138710
>I'm currently at ep 12.
You have some valid complaints, anon, and whether or not you decide to stick with the series, the next two episodes or so are really great.
>>15138767
Thank you, I wasn't trying to hate and I strongly tried to make the point that I like these kind of shows; I also for some strange reason love Bemular so I know he's featured at some point.
I just want those early episodes to come back, it just seemed like they put more effort and weren't phoning it in; in the last few I watched every kaiju has a fire breath and there's not even at attempt at explaining how Ultraman defeats them.
It's true that I prefer shows with overarching plots so maybe I should try Nexus.
>>15138801
>I just want those early episodes to come back, it just seemed like they put more effort and weren't phoning it in
I've been rewatching from the begging and was surprised how many elements were just ignored or dropped over time. The first six episodes are a pretty tidy arc but then the show kind of drifts until the Belial card comes into play. And I think the fights really begin to suffer after Orb Calibur shows up, we get pretty much four episodes in a row where the monster is defeated using the sword's four modes. I know they are trying to sell toys, but it's done in a way that distracts from what is otherwise a pretty engaging show.
In the beginning, Naomi was taking all these different jobs so she could pay the rent, and avoiding the mystery landlady (who I assumed would be Hiroko Sakurai). And it was that interesting or anything, but it just got dropped. It reminded me of Leo all over again.
>>15138853
I agree, and I think the problem is the show being only 25 episodes but they cram 50 episodes worth of materials into it. Hurricane Slash's Lance was obviously intended as a major toy, but it got dropped pretty quick.
While I won't call Orb lost potential: the show, it definitely would have benefited from more episodes.
>>15138710
Orb is pretty great, but you have to hang on
Otherwise, I'm pretty new to Ultraman myself, I really enjoyed Mebius, Tiga and Nexus, so at least give them a try
What's your opinion on the Ultraman manga?
Currently reading it, in a way it's enjoyable but on the other hand it's pretty dumb to ditch all the giant monsters stuff and make everything human sized
>>15138924
Sadly, Tsuburaya can't seem to afford much more than this lately, even with Bandai's buyout of them.

Orb is pretty good. Origin Saga has been fairly disappointing.
Finished watching Orb(first ultra i've seen) on Saturday, been watching ginga slowly, I'm on episode 10 and it's pretty meh. It's only good when it's not ginga but just being ultraman. Anyways, thank god it's short. Probably watch Ginga S just for shits

Ginga S is actually very good.
>>15140581
Congratulations, you're almost done with the prologue to Ginga S.
>>15140581
There are a lot of debates regarding the worst KR or SS entry
There is no debate in that Ginga is the worst Ultraman entry.
It aired with Wizard and Garo Yami, what the time that was
>>15138751
Orb is actually one of the shows with an over arching plot. It's not to the level of Nexus or Gaia, but it's there.
>>15138853
The odd jobs angle was never a big plot thing. Once the story shifted to bigger things, it was naturally going to play less and less of a role but it's still pretty important. It's the catalyst for the episode with the giant statue as Naomi's friends make fun of her for having a weird job and not really being able to afford pretty dresses and shoes.
That first arc was just that, an arc. A more traditional Ultraman series was probably going to take us through another 10 or 20 episodes of that and while I think it would have been fine, I was actually starting to lose interest in the show around that point. Things become a lot more interesting once that monster mafia thing shows up and we start seeing a bit more of Gai and Juggler's interactions.
I'm not a huge action guy, so it's hard to comment there, but the fights still felt okay. The Thunder Breaster arc had fantastic fights all around and the finale itself was beautiful.
>>15138924
>Hurricane Slash's Lance was obviously intended as a major toy, but it got dropped pretty quick.
It probably wasn't. Ultraman Jack had a lance weapon so, naturally, they gave Hurricane Slash a lance weapon as well.
>>15139009
>Sadly, Tsuburaya can't seem to afford much more than this lately, even with Bandai's buyout of them.
Bandai only owns a small portion in the company. FIELDS, the advertising firm that produces a crapton of Pachinko machines and stuff, outright owns Tsuburaya. They're deeply dedicated to Ultraman and it's thanks to them that we've even gotten anything at this point. They confirmed the next series way back in October (no name, just that there would be one in 2017), so they're in this for the long haul.

The first Ginga is widely regarded as the worst Ultra series by a pretty big margin.
Ginga S is a significant step up. It's still not the best Ultra, but it's at least watchable and has an actual budget bigger than whatever pocket change the crew had on hand when they started filming.

Does Ginga or Ginga S explain why Ultras and Kaijus can be summoned out of dolls and cards? Like in Ultra X and Orb?
Also, Orb Origin here looks like he's about to fondle someone's boobs.
>>15147492
Spark Doll is supposedly Lugiel's doing.
Why Showa and Heisei are mixed, no one knows.
X is parallel to Ginga, but we don't know why Spark Dolls exists. Cards are made by Xio based on the dolls
Orb is just...
>>15147492
Why does Orb Origin look like he's about to squeeze a nice pair of boobs?

Nope, not really. They don't really go into detail about the source of Orb's powers either. That's pretty much why I wonder if Ginga explains something because those are the shows I skipped.
>>15148134
Ginga doesn't. You don't have to suffer through it.
Still watch Ginga S, that's still above decent.
>>15148114

Or better yet, Capsule Monsters. Dan used those sometimes, back in the day.

Basically there was a great Ultra/kaiju war, and everyone was turned into toys and fell to Earth on the mountain where Ginga takes place. Also I think the war was in the future. Don't think to hard about it, Tsubaraya certainly didn't.

There is a massive difference between expansion and just making shit up as you go along to tie things together.
The heroes in your pic are perfectly fine, it's when they do alternate universe/time hole stuff that not only makes things overly complicated for no reason, but it causes them to reuse the same kaiju, which I believe has ruined a lot of them. When you keep using the same monsters over and over again and their deaths keep getting easier, it kills all tension and memorability of that monster and any fight it has later on.
>>15165362
They had no other choice. The older fanbase expecting the formula to never change has crippled Tsuburaya to the point that they can't make too much new monsters. The only way to stop recycling monsters is to wait for the older fans to go extinct, and that'll be quite a long time.

Meb, I think only one episode.

>>15165438
The older fans aren't the only problem. Tsuburaya's still banking on nostalgic older fans while trying to court modern kids and stay trendy. It's not necessarily bad, but it's a fine line and it's obvious they haven't found solid footing in the area yet.
>>15167183
Mebius ep 38. It wasn't a huge role, but it was a really fun character ep and he made a great one-shot.

>Ultra-Act line is dead
>tfw no Orb figs
>tfw will have to either put up with tiny Figuarts figs or just accumulate the remaining UAs off of scalpers
Why did I back this horse...

TBF the Junis forms Ultra-Acts kinda suck
>>15180721
Hopefully the Figuarts line actually bothers to make Anphans instead of just doing the super forms and calling it a day.
Episode 19 of Orb made me cry.
Thanks /m/, this Ultraman thing of yours is really good.
>>15180798
Say what you want about the franchise, it's pretty good at tugging at the heart strings
I could swore that there was another fallen Ultra besides Belial, but I can't remember. Does someone knows what I am talking about?
>>15182478
Tsurugi/Hikari (mebius)?
Tiga's Dark Giants?
Nexus' Dark Giants?
Stageshow-only Geist Ultras?
Corrupted Ultras from Ginga?
>>15182520
Nah, it wasn't an evil twin or mind control deal, it was a legit hero falling to evil thing.
>>15179742
Saga better not be jobbing if he's coming.
>>15183187
To be completely honest with ya, I hope we never see Saga again
I'd prefer to see Legend or some kind of Gaia Agul fusion
Objectively speaking, who would you say are the top ten Kaiju in the Ultra franchise?
or at least like, top three
>>15185142
Zetton, Gomora, and Eleking, not necessarily in that order.
>>15185142
>Zetton
>Baltan
>Red King
>Eleking
>Gomora
>Golza
>Pigmon
>Black King
>Tyrant
>Belial if he counts
>Metron if not
>>15182550
Ultraman Dark?
Dark Zagi has a UR Fusion Card now. I'm not sure if it means anything significant but it'd be nice to see him not be horribly nerfed like he was in Ginga.

Max has been dubbed.
>>15190833
As much as the prospect of a non-4Kids dub is tempting, what is telling us this won't just come from Malaysia?
>>15190903
Kind of curious why they didn't have a clip available with the press release :p
I assumed it's Winckler bc he stated he had something else in pre-production. But I doubt it's a Malay Eng dub, not even sure if Max got one.
>>15191016
Ugh lord. I dunno about that. His X and Ginga S movie dub wasn't exactly stellar
>>15191018
Get used to it. He promised quality subs as well, but no word on physical/streaming release yet
>>15191027
Is he going to be the Chaiyo of America
>>15191058
He hasn't claimed co-ownership of Ultraman, so he's still sub-Macek level.
>>15191341
>co-ownership
Muther fucker, Chaiyo claimed to MAKE Ultraman.
>>15191507
Huh. I figured it was a Stan Lee deal, not a Bob Kane deal.
Yeah, Winckler will NEVER be as bad as Chaiyo.
>>15191341
Mother fucker, Macek never claimed ownership of anything. We would have never had Macross in this country without him
I know this isn't /wsr/
But where can I find new OP of Orb Origin Saga "True Fighter"?
>>15194655
Here is a link for it, although its in FLAC format there is also an english version of the song surprisingly.

Why Story 0 is non-canon?
HEY GUYS WHATS GOING ON IN THIS THREAD
>>15197398
FUCK YOU MONKEY MAN
>>15197390
Because nobody's read it.
Lightning Attacker and Emerium Slugger are both getting suits and vinyl toy releases.
>>15198309
You know, I'm surprised it took them this long to whore out Emerium Slugger. Glad to see Lightning Attacker getting a sofubi though.
If only Sky Dash Max was as lucky...
poor juggler
lost his chance to become a warrior of light
suddenly meeting lots of warrior of light
no show
no wonder he has to go full darkness
>>15197295
It says "original English ver" as in... it was made in English first?
Eagerly awaiting Toy Fair, keep an eye on the Bandai booth

Seven. Seven seven seven.
>>15102652
So, which shows have been fansubbed and by who? I'm new to this Ultraman shit.
>>15204755
Fansubs all but stopped after Crunchy took over official licensing
'Man and Seven has older releases
Only show that has fansub and nothing else is what, Tiga?
>inb4 4Kids
>>15204764
Mebius got fansubbed a long time ago. Oh heck, I'll just post this.
>>15204791
Damn, haven't seen that chart in month
Also needs updating with Orb and X's movie as well as mememan

Sounds a bit high. That would mean that 1 out of 10 people in the entire world watched it.
You'd have to mess with the numbers quite a bit to get 800 million viewers. Like, you would have to count the viewers for each episode as a unique viewer rather than a repeat, Youtube views, and the brief viewership from channel surfing. And each time someone switches channel and switches back is counted as another viewer and multiplied with average household numbers.

It's 800 million views not viewers. I know I've watched most of them three times.

That is standard shonen power creep. Once one guy can do a kamehameha wave, then everyone is able to do it.
