*** THERE IS NO "GUNPLA GENERAL" DISCORD SERVER. IGNORE AND FILTER THE TRIPFAG (!jyii1UI8x.) THAT SAYS OTHERWISE. THERE IS ONLY A TEXT CHANNEL ON THE /m/ DISCORD: https://discord.gg/TGjVRAG ***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Start Date: 12/1/16
Due Date: 2/1/17 [tentative]
Submissions go to
[email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also include some WIP photos of the kits being constructed/painted/etc as validation that it's your custom.

Hey, I have a legitimate question. Why ist it after all these years, you don't want to try anything new with your kits? Like panel lining, campaign parts, or kitbashing? Like, what other hobbies do you have?

What do you guys think is the best HG Zaku 2? It seems the origin ones are good, but i want a standard color one. Should i just wait until they inevitably release one in that color? Also which one would you guys say is the most anime accurate?.

>>15098962

Well the old HGUC is show accurate, but the downside is its old. Since Zakus sell like hot cakes, a mass production version of the Origin Zaku is inevitable

I finally worked up the courage to try one of my Eva kits that I've been sitting on.
Haven't done the waterslides or topcoated yet, but I'm really impressed with how well the stickers and panel lining made this thing look.
For those who are curious, LMHG models like these are much closer to MG kits in size and part count.
I had to do quite a lot of de-nubbing on this one, and there are some imperfections in some of the larger pieces.
I'm not going to paint this one because I have an identical kit due to an ordering mishap. Sometime much later I'll build the other one with full finishing techniques and compare them.
It was a fun build, and definitely the most complex that I've attempted so far.

In other news, I'm still working on my 1981 Gogg kit, but that's going slowly. I've got 0 painting experience, so I'm trying to do it properly (primer is curing on a couple of pieces now).

Had to loosen the elbow joints since they were too tight. Also the frame for the shoulder is kinda tricky and is prone to stress marks if you're not careful. Gonna go get some cement at our local shop if ever it breaks and since I'm out of cement anyway.

I hear the black pour type sucks ass, and doesn't flow nearly as well as it should. Supposedly it's better to use the grey.

I've got the Pour Type set that comes with the remover pen, grey, brown, blue, orange, and olive. The grey is REALLY dark, like if you give it a second application you end up with a black line anyway 90% of the time, and it flows very well. I haven't tried the other colors yet, and for the life of me I have no idea what you would use the blue, orange, and olive pour types for.

With the MG MK II 2.0 you can put it in kung fu poses and it'll stay up all day long. Very balanced and articulate kit, would recommend. Only downside to me are that the shoulders don't have a whole lot of forward/backward range of motion to them which can make posing a two-handed grip on the rifle a little finicky.

>So it could just be me.
No, I was in a similar position when I started. For half of the kits I built in the beginning I cut my fingers so often and so deep my right thumb has visible scars on it to this day. But it just dawned to me a few weeks ago when snapping together something that I hadn't cut myself in months. There's a point where you just get the right type of grip and cutting method and then never cut yourself again.
The pour-type pens aren't -that- bad, they just don't flow too well at certain angles. Just use it on thin longish lines, and the regular gundam markers for panel lining for everything else. When it flows, it does it's job perfectly fine. But yeah, it is a bit messy.

I was hoping I could do all my panellines with that pen.
Finding the right equipment is such a bitch for some reason in my city.
I guess I'll just have to wait and buy some marker sets on HLJ since my second kit(sengoku astray 144) that came in yesterday evening needs a lot more painting/marking than my first kit(barbatos lupus 144).

Speaking of which, what's the general's thoughts on airbrushing enamels? I have a Humbrol Chrome Silver which gives a really nice shiny finish by hand (not Aclad levels, but still really nice) but I heard somewhere that enamels can be a pain to airbrush.

Thanks I'll check it out.

>>
>>15100197
It just depends on what colors you think you'll need for your kits and what effect you want to achieve with them, look through here.
http://slist.amiami.com/top/search/list?s_keywords=gundam+marker&submit=Search&pagemax=40

Just look up some guides and reviews on youtube, they'll tell you what you need to know.

The only ones I would recommend are GM01, GM02, GM03 for the panel lines, especially the 01 and 02 since you'll be using those a lot. People say to use the GM03, the brown panel lining marker, on the color red or yellow, but I personally think it doesn't fit that well with either. It's your choice either way because le gunpla is freedom and all that.

Yeah that's why I added the meme prefix to it - yes, you can do whatever the fuck you want to your kits, but if you do a poor job of it and it just looks stupid you can't use "gunpla is freedom" as a "get out of jail free" card for any of your errors or shitty work.
Having pride in stuff you did is great, but in an creative hobby humility and ability to take criticism is key. You can also learn a new trick or better way of doing something that will improve the end result of your kits.

How do you guys eliminate connection lines? I want to have a lineless LMHG but I would also like to spray each plastic piece separately so I don't end up getting paint on other connected pieces, but to remove lines you need in many cases to glue parts together to encase moving parts. Thus endangering getting sprayed paint on said moving internal parts. I guess taping is the solution but I've had cases with paint getting under the tape which is annoying as fuck.

what are some mistakes you've made when building gunpla?

for me:
>panel lined with gundam markers then used testor top coat and it made the lines run
> rg mk ii went to put a clear coat on before panel lining and putting decals on. accidentally used matte coat instead of clear and now the panel lines come out terrible.
>mg full armor gundam thunderbolt ver ka I put the water slides on but decided to let them sit overnight and was going to put a clear coat on in the morning. water slides fell off and ripped. now it's covered with bits of decals
> mg sinanju ver ka fucked up water slides for the gold trims.

Recently I've gotten a pair of Xuron 2175 Maxi-Shear cutters, and they handle pretty well. They're also larger than average so they fit my big ol' mitts nicely and as a plus they'll give you more leverage so cuts that would be more difficult with smaller nippers happen more smoothly.
They were 13 dollarydoos on prime when I got them so I wasn't put out that much further than any other pair of cheap nippers. I've seen other people recommend Gundam Planet ones, but I have no experience with those.

I got a set of the gundamplanet nippers for christmas and love them. I think if you snapbuild or build a lot of kits they are a no-brainer and totally worth the cash.

I previously used tamiya nippers for cutting kits out and still use a xuron 2175 for scratchbuilding work because they have larger blades and the shearing works really well on styrene stock, which is softer than kit plastic.

Any of these are good choices but you will be happier in the long run if you buy the best tool you can each time.

Also I know a lot of you guys are using cans or handpainting and want to have more fun paint options, check out fingernail stamping plates. They are basically engraved metal plates you pour paint into and then scrape the excess off, then use a clear silicone stamp to transfer the paint. They are cheap and work well with enamels, and you don't need any other equipment.

Well that rose could be a nice decal for a custom unit.

I did something kind of similar but more of a pain in the ass, I sanded down rhinestones to fit certain slots on the model kit.
Used it for the head camera sensor and in the thrusters. Turned out well.
Was a gift for my ex that took months, hopefully he didn't toss it.

How about water proof paper, if there's such a thing.

Then we can use xacto knifes and carve whatever we want.

3.0

Having both, Origin is infinitely more solid, I could have it stand on one foot off a ledge, for example

It's been long, /m/.

So I finally have time to play with some plastic, and my friend conveniently found places in HK where you can rent airbrush and booth at a rather cheap price. So the Nu head finally got some experimental work done. Repainted out-of place blue parts, repainted the chromed parts completely forgot about the front gold rings until assembly, etc. It's not done, what with decals and some repaints and lining and all, but it's going to be. It's nice to plastic crack.

Ayy you getting this 1/35 Unicorn Bust too?
Shit's dope as fuck, would make a pretty nice deskpiece like a gunpla lava lamp or some shit.
At about the price of an MG Sazabi ver ka, I'd get one if I'm not currently short on cash.
>>
>>15102478
Not that I have the room to accommodate it, does it transform Unicorn>Destroy?

It's by a no name 3rd party YIHUI.
Damn, after some digging, found out it does not transform, stuck in Destroy.
A shame too, at that price, size, and only the bust, should be easy to make a solid transformation.

It's fine, guy, the silence means there's not much to complain about. there's nothing ruining in them other than the posing being a bit stiff, but that's just whatever you want.
Also it's like morning/midday and everyone in america that can afford the hobby has to make money somehow.

>>
>>15102646
You're fine! What I meant is the poses they're in don't seem as natural as they could be, but if you like how they look, then you did a good job. you don't have to glue parts since, for most kits, everything stays in place just fine. for a beginner, with MG's no less, you did a ok.

lmao why, I only use it when posting updates and answering questions about it.

Anyway, overall small piece , didn't give me much trouble except that part on the corner thah led up to a smooth front, took me a while to figure that out.

Also fixed the shoulder pads, were too thin but you couldn't tell without looking at it from the sides.

I should prepare myself for lots of detail painting

Anyway, I remember reading somewhere that an option set cointaining 2 rifles for Gusion would be released and i'm assuming it's on Set 9 since 8 only has parts for the grunts.

I'm unsure whether I should panel line that area around the kneecap, or just leave it be.
