Because they were, at the time, the latest and greatest. They needed to serve up some fresh whoop ass on Earth so that Maria's path would be clear, so they made the craziest, most outlandish, and downright badass suits they could think of.

Bug robots who past the 1980s but hadn't reached the shitty edginess of the late 1990s in terms of bug visuals that permeates a lot of mediums to this day thanks to Starship Troopers and Independence Day.

It was a nice sweet spot that's lost forever.

Oh don't get me wrong, I do like a couple of them a lot. But compared to the likes of Zeta and F91 they do leave a bit to be desired.

I mean, I know it wasn't featured in the show, but still

I'm watching Victory right now, and I'm really enjoying it.

Of course, I found the first 20-odd episodes to be horrible,with it only getting really good once they infiltrate Zanscare the fist time. And Shakti somehow evolved into a semi-tolerable character. I'm glad I stuck with it to this point - I only hope it stays this good.

It's like a reverse UC Gundam - in the first three series the quality was sort of meh before they got to Earth and then it got good, while with Victory it STARTS with being shit on Earth and then gets good in space.

This and the Shokew/Rig Shokew were the best suits. Most of the other early suits were shit though. Always hated the rotor shields though, and transforming into helicopters.
