If the Wachowsky bros hadn't tried to replicate Oshii's major with Trinity in The Matrix, we probably wouldn't have had such cinematographic gems as

to cement the "expressionless slo-mo kung-fu superwoman (with optional skintight latex bodysuit)" archetype in popular culture. Which is exactly what Scarjo's Black Widow happens to be (and she's really one of the poorest examples of the type).

I'm actually cautiously optimistic about Covenant, if only because there's still something fresh in my mind about Alien as a no frills slasher horror flavored with sexual ultraviolence.

I knew someone was going to say that. The point is, there's an in-story reason why the suit makes it LOOK like she's naked, and it ties in with the themes of what it means to be human/machine. For all the cynicism and feminist outrage over 80's anime nudity, they sure don't do their research, and they're sure knee-jerk. Why aren't fictional female characters allowed to be naked even though the context demands it? Now, if we're talking about the Major's pink thong outfit from SAC, I'm all for that shit being dumb. Why would she wear something deliberately provocative IN the government building doing paperwork? But this is an adaptation of the original film - which has themes including illustrating the "shell" of the human body.

They Wachowski brothers showed the original GitS movie during their pitch for the Matrix film. No, The Matrix was a trend-setter, GitS is one 90s horror scifi anime among many others like it.
When all those action schlockfests of the 2000s put everyone in skintight suits and made them do super-amazing anime stuff and be angsty, they weren't trying to imitate GitS, they were trying to imitate The Matrix.
Before The Matrix, there was nothing like The Matrix, there was only ultraviolent scifi anime, video games and kung-fu movies.
But before GitS there were already mature anime with DEEP themes, hyperdetailed character designs, gore, action, tits, a meditative moody atmosphere and sci-fi themes or spooky asian ghost themes. Not necessarily in the same proportions but the basic formula was already there.
