Hey, all. PCfag here.
I was in love with Armored Core back in the day, and I still love the customization. My question to you fine gentlemen is - what's a good PC game with heavy levels of mech tinkering? Is there anything that's close to that good?
In b4 Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries - played that one, love it, looking for something new.

There used to be a game called Exteel that had pretty in-depth levels of customization leading to some hilarious and varied builds, but that died around 2010 iirc.
Hawken promised extremely in-depth armor-core esque levels of customization but as we all know completely and utterly failed to deliver. Nowadays it's pretty much dead
I'm curious as to if there's any other alternatives too, preferably multiplayer
There's MAV, it's still in beta http://bombdogstudios.com/ The customization is more like Chrome Hounds though.
That's about the only mech game I can think of that has in depth customization. My dream is to one day make a mecha game with customization. But I'm still too much of a beginner to make that yet.

Simply put PC isn't a platform mecha games land on often because their general spawning area, Japan, doesn't have an infatuation with PC gaming and is more focused on consoles and mobile games. The game you're looking for likely won't exist. On the other hand, if you like Gundam give Gundam Breaker for PS3/Vita a shot, it's really in depth.

Gameplay was shit, but it was shit you could roll with, kinda like Gunz.

Doujin games or older Armored Core games.
There's M.A.V. but it's horribly unfinished.
Good news, the customization in Mechwarrior is severely limited so any game you get your hands on will be better at it.
Bad news is that emulation is one of the very few options to play any of said games.
There's Metal Fatique but that's an RTS, albeit it's customization is pretty great.
for PC mechwarrior online is a decent pick learning curve isnt too bad but as all free to play games are the grind is real

If you don't mind emulating, the Front Mission series is pretty good for that sort of thing.

Heavy Gear Assault should be getting into a decent level of customization in that regard. The standard Gears use a common internal skeleton with the external armor plates determining each type visually, and you can mix and match the parts as well as customize the weapon loadouts, equipment, and paint/texture appearance. It seem the weapons as well will be using that customization style with each type having a common internal structure and various manufacturer parts to determine the exterior appearance. A goal is to try and get as many of the units from the tabletop game as possible into HGA, which appears be something on the order of 85+ Gears as well several varieties of Striders. Menu options for Tanks and Hovertanks are also visible in the market which suggests they too will be usable though it has not been mentioned yet if it'll be full combined arms or if there will be various gameplay modes specific to each unit type.
