I think the moral of Eden is very similar to the moral of NGE: Life sucks. Like, Life REALLY sucks. But sometimes it doesn't suck. And it's those moments of non-suckiness that make it worth putting up with the suck

I never said it was an equivalent exchange, but the fact he continues on with his life (finding love in Interpol Girl, having a kid, etc.) DESPITE EVERYTHING HE'S LOST gives what could be a very dark ending a surprisingly hopeful light.]

Because Eden changed what it wanted to be every two chapters until landing on vaguely instrumentality like bullshit. Where as GitS has remained with a consistent tone for each of its incarnations.

Also the scale of the original manga and movie are small, personal, and accomplishes what it sets out to do.
In Eden the scale starts small, grows huge at the expense of leaving behind the MC, so we watch as people we're not invested in resolve a plot that sprung up in the middle of the story. As soon as Eden's first arc ended it went to shit.

I think Eden's length more than allows for the expansion of the story from a small group's survival (First Arc) to a larger group's place in society story (Pimps n' Hoes Arc) to an ultimately mankind survival story (Final Arc)

GitS had an overall consistent tone and structure to it all that could work well in any adaptation hence why the movies and TV series are so different from the manga yet retain the same formula, Shirow is mainly an idea man he's not a good writer in the slightest but Oshii and Kenji took his work and made two separate continuities their own to bring Shirow's ideas to full realization and give it some goddamn class.

Eden is a fucking mess and unlike Shirow Endo's ideas are taken from much better sources of material and are not his own. There's really nothing particularly appealing about the subject matter either unless you're a sadist who like seeing characters needless suffer or a masochist that like to read through garbage you're not going to have a good time. And the hallmark in this series isn't within its poorly thought out setting but the drama that ensues between the boring cast which reaches its peak in the second story arc which ironically have nothing to do with Cyberpunk and crashes down immediately after where it decides to become Evangelion-lite with a side of shit.

So basically GitS is a concept that can only have come from Shirow's mind and like all his works from back then was interesting enough to get the attention of producers while Eden was Endo's poor attempt to cash-in on the gritty sci-fi stage of the 90's along with everything else he thought was cool in his head but winded up stupid on paper. Hard to believe Shirow "Horse Porn" Masamune is more classy than this hack.

I always feel that Eden was just a misstep when he tried to do something outside his range since his previous works were good even if they were a bit smutty at times. Meguru is a solid sports manga that got ignored due to it not being "edgy" like Eden but they missed out. His latest work looks like a mess though. Shirow stopped trying this much is true though he was never a good writer to begin with. After Man Machine Interface I'm pretty sure most people are glad he's not associated with the franchise anymore and he can just draw his horse porn.

the GitS manga doesn't have a consistent tone or structure.
Tonally it's a mess of action espionage, brainy speculative scifi, supernatural mystery, cop drama, and comedy. It sometimes goes from whimsical to super-serious to silly to massively self-important within the course of a single chapter.
Structurally it's episodic but some plotlines reappear and disappear, the focus shifts from one character to the other depending on the chapters and versions but without creating proper character arcs, and overall, everything seems inconsequential because even the over-arching plots are left unfinished. Some chapters are even dedicated purely to worldbuilding but shed no light on the actual story.

It's just the pet project of an autistic author, just like Eden.

And the movies certainly didn't bring Shirow's idea to full fruition. Neither did the series.

Oshii simply used GitS as an opportunity to create one of the creepy, lofty noir seinen he was already known for, and which were successful in the 80s and 90s. All he had to do was focus on one story for each film, add his usual masterful directing style to it, and remove everything that wouldn't work with it.

And the series are just a police procedural in the future. Once again, just handpick some of the manga's elements that fit a precise tone, and remove the rest. The Laughing Man arc probably wasn't Shirow's idea and could have been inserted in any other futuristic espionage series with just as much success.

The adaptations were successful because they had high production values and knew what their audiences would like. Not because they revealed the hidden genius of Shirow or someshit.

So really, it's not Endo's fault if Eden was never adapted and made super-famous. Oshii clearly doesn't give a shit about being faithful to the source material and neither does the rest of IG. If they wanted, they could also create massively successful movies and series out of Eden, but GitS simply got there first.
