For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

***Graze Group Build***
Rules:
Pick any 1/144 or 1/100 kit from the Graze family (Pic Related), and paint and customize it. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a Graze Ritter and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

I might as well ask you guys here.

Since the Groupbuild has reached it's halfway point I suppose it's best to try asking this now. I know a lot of you are dealing with the struggle of painting in the winter, so would you be up to having the Graze Build extended through February? Both to allow more people to participate and to allow for people to finish over time.

Haven't built mine yet, but here's what some Japanese anons were saying about it http://futabalog.com/thread/ea3e4bb506599615040abe4046f7695e

Some obvious things gleamed from that thread are that it's proportions aren't TV accurate (which was pretty obvious even in the promo pictures), and while it is a new mold Koto's reused the joint structure of their Rebuild kits, so it's got a good range of motion.

They're not all crazy detailed like the Y-Wing, it depends on the the kit. I managed to get by with just regular markers and pencils on the Resistance X-Wing kit.

But if you're just starting I'd probably recommend something simpler like one of the troopers, an A-Wing or TIE Fighter. They look great out of the box with very little extra work.

Buy an A-Wing, that's pretty light on the panel lines.
>>15080264
>store doesn't have regular x-wing, original or resistance
>only has poe's custom
Can't say I'm a fan of the orange and black. So my store has the A-Wing, Y-Wing, and Tie Interceptor, and they might still have a Snowspeeder but they might have sold it by now. I'm not a filthy Imperial so I'm not really a huge fan of the Interceptor, even though it's everybody's favourite, and I'm a little hesitant to get the A-Wing purely because it's the most streamlined and thus visually has the least going on compared to the greeblier Y-Wing, even if I like it more than said Y-Wing. Less visually interesting, I guess.

Decisions, decisions.

The LMHG Eva kits are pretty good. Surprisingly articulated, seamless arms that are actually not complete shit and really good proportions. Also working entry plug mechanism. It will need paint if you want it to look good though, not very good colour separation and over-reliance on stickers due to being an older kit. TLDR Snapshit's worst nightmare.

>>15080157
You know, I'm not sure. The body doesn't bother me so much, and the kit looks like it has its good points (notably the arms) and the articulation looks excellent- but those puny shoulder pylons are just inexcusable.

I might still buy it anyway though- I know Kotobukuya's colour separation/engineering is pretty top notch, and the articulation looks good. Besides it's not as if Unit 01's proportions were particularly consistent in the show itself. Gainax being Gainax, the proportions (and, uh, size) seemed to warp depending on whatever looked best at the time, which whilst not a bad thing in and of itself, is pretty annoying for modelling purposes.

I still think the old Bandai kit is the more accurate and overall better looking kit, but the Kotobukiya kit will probably need less masking and overall will be easier to paint.

Speaking of the Bandai kit, roughly what scale is it (for the purposes of dioramas and the like)?
>>
>>15080373
>that Z3
Erotic.
>>
>>15080374
I'm also a fan of the old LMHG; it was my first kit, the reason why I got the new Koto kit is because I always feel a bit of shame whenever I look at it. And yeah, while it would've been nice to get a bulkier kit from Koto, the proportions aren't that much of a dealbreaker and I've known about them ever since it was revealed. I completely agree about the shoulder pylons.

As with any TV Eva kit, thanks to Gainax not having set sizes it's nonscale. It's pretty big though; it stands a good head over the 3.0. Here's an old pic taken of my first two kits, snapfagged and nubridden, taken in shitty lighting with a cheap cellphone camera for comparison. I'll redo them when I level up into a painter.

Did I do good?
>>
>>15080108
Who knows. They seem to have never assigned an actual price or release date to it and I haven't seen anything promoting it in a good while. Could very well be dead due to lack of interest/poor scramble gundam sales but its odd that they seem to have made it all the way to the colored plastic model stage rather than just a prototype.
>>
>>15080240
Not to mention the fact that he literally hates paint, supposedly.
>>
>>15080422
Well it was just a scramble gundam with some nu gundam parts on it and scratch built add ons for the funnels. Plus given that it always had the hobby japan logo beside it, I think it may have just been a promo custom to build hype for the new try amazing manga. Hell the clear parts had just been painted opaque orange which was what lead me to believe its not a real kit which is a shame since the transformation is so much nicer than the regular scramble gundam.

>>
>>15080416
Oh I know how big it is (I own the kit myself), I just wondered what sort of scale of scenery it would go best with. I know the Koto Rebuild kit is listed as 1/400- if we assume that the "proper" size for the TV Evas is the same as the Rebuild Evas, judging by the size difference between LMHG and Koto, would the LMHG be about 1/350? Maths isn't my strong suit, but I know 1/350 is a popular ship model size.
>>
>>15080420
The gold plastic looks kinda nasty, and those stickers aren't the best, but the actual design looks good. I reckon with a bit of paint it should look pretty neat. I haven't seen IBO but I do like the Barbatos' design, it has a very 90s look about it.

>>
>>15080889
SDs (since they ALL need paint), the Hi-Mock, or the GM are good paint practice.
>>
>>15080889
Well you have some nubs that aren't cleaned off either, but what I do is I cut the part out of the gate with quite a large amount of space left.
I cut most of the large nub off leaving about .5cm nub, which I cut one more time leaving it almost flush, cut off the rest of the now tiny nub with my hobby knife. Sand off any amount that might be left.

What you want to practice painting are either cheap kits or kits with a lot of surface area, and if you're careful you can do both. GMs are popular since they're always sub 10 dollarydoos a pop, the HiMock gives you a great blank canvas, the HG Gusion is good for similar reasons but you already have a Gusion, the Graze are great because the inner frame facilitates the part separation and it'll give you some detail painting practice.
You can get all of those for sub15 dollars and if you're careful all of them for 7-10 each.

I'm late looking back at what I build last year:
- The funnels of both Nu Gundams were a real pain in the ass.
- RG Sinanju looks pretty but is garbage for posing.
- Freedom 2.0 is fantastic.
- IJ feels really dated, I think soon we will see more 2.0 of the SEED kits.

>>

you mean the original MG Freedom?

the 2.0 has sharper proportions and much more mobility thanks to the new hip joints, however, these are very fragile and plenty of people have snapped them, be careful

the plasma cannons in the 2.0 also open up for no reason

this review does a quick comparison between the 2: http://hobbynotoriko.yumenogotoshi.com/mg-freedom-2.html

GF bought me pic related for christmas, told me she chose it because it was the best looking.

I only built 1 gunpla before, and wanted to get into panel lines and top coating for my second. However this one seems really glossy and I'm not sure a top coat would be a good idea.

What would you recommend to improve it (for a beginner) ?
>>

Putting aside your GF's excellent taste, Sinanju is going to be a handfull. For now, just concentrate on building it properly. Enjoy the experience.

You dont have to do all that gay bullshit to enjoy the hobby? Also some of us dont have the time or money to invest in all those extras you do to "pretty up" your kit. Some of us are content with the way kits look out of the box. Egotistical asshole.
>>
>>15081318
Not all top coats are flat/matte though. Clear coats/candy finishes exist if you want to retain gloss.

>2nd Gunpla
>RG Sinanju
>With all it's fuckload of parts
Well since it's an RG, you'll have plenty of parts to practice panel lining on. If you do get to painting it, remember to thin paints (unless you're using a spray) or it'll look bad. Since you're starting out, practicing painting on a SD may not be a bad idea.

In the end , it's your call on how to build the kit.

The head manages to be an even worse sticker fest than the first Rebake, and it doesn't come with rifles iirc. Requires some paint to the binders, shoulders, and legs.
Astaroth origin is fantastic in color separation by comparison, even if every one of those colors is red.

The shoulders are just of the Graze custom and have had the holes drilled out for metal detail parts. The kit is using it as the base graze going by the chest and backpack.

And yeah its a genoace II head, you can tell if you look closely at the visort part itself as it's square off on the corners for that sort of "plus" shape the the genoace one has. The kit is just a kitbash of graze custom and genoace II (the rifle stock is actually the handle of the dodds gun and genoace II comes with both guns). The only part I can't figure out is the added head part.

Starting on the nazi robit, the chest piece. My first attempt as a reverse wash, and holy fuck is this crisp. Naturally i fucked it up the first time. I painted over the gold with the green instead of the black, because why the fuck would I pay attention to anything. But I went and sprayed over the fuck ups and it came out great. I never really had anything to try this on before, but it looks nice as fuck. And I was surprised with how easy it was too.

Are they from something in particular or are they customs?

Excuse my dumb ass if they're the standard stickers from some IBO kit.

Thinking about what kit to get with limited cash. which should i go for? Already gonna get a HG V-dash.
HG Gehennam Space Type
HG Gaeon
HG Io Frame Shiden
HGUC Qubeley (revive)
HG Geireru

This kit will be my second or third build. Reason i'm asking is because i'm quite indecisive.

Geirail is a solid kit all around, although I may be a bit biased since it's probably one of my favorite designs from IBO. Grab a weapons set though since the machine gun and axe it comes with are a bit sparse.

If you want to stick with UC however the Qubeley is a fun build and will be almost nothing like the V-Dash

This is my first build. These nubs are disgusting. I used 220, 360 and 600 sandpaper. The nub wouldn't disappear, and it started scratching the part making it even uglier. Any tips to sand it properly?
>>
Why is there so many builds in here with no panel lining.

It hurts.
>>
>>15083101
You have to use an exacto knife to get them off.

Angle your knife to where it's almost flat and shave off the nub. Then hold your exacto knife edge straight on to the nub and put pressure, then scrape back and forth till the white of the nub is gone. Then if needed go over it with a smooth grit.

I've only built 4 kits but this is the order I go in and I get perfect results every time.
>>
>>15083101
>>15083120
Also I would take apart that chest piece so you can remove the nubs easier.
>>
>>15083101
Trim most of it off with an x-acto knife, then sand the rest away. The sanding marks won't be too visible if after using like a 600 then 1000 grit sandpaper. Also, I'm pretty sure topcoat helps hide the scratch marks.

Other than that, good taste for getting that GM my friend.

I still see some very visible nubs that could be touched up. You really gotta sand it down flat, man. If anything, you can use your nippers to trim the larger nubs off so you have less to sand out.

I suggest getting this tool set. People will give me shit for linking this and just say to get them individually, but these tools will introduce you to the many ways to remove nubs and everything here is good quality.

Also, get a magic eraser. It gets rid of the smudgy texture files leave on the plastic. I haven't heard anyone suggest magic erasers here, it's amazing.

Also great for restoring other shit, I bought a used PS2 and made it look new with just a magic eraser.

Anyway buy a panel lining marker as well. It really makes a difference. Use it to get some ink on the recessed panels and other details, wipe off the excess with a tissue or something, then boom you got a kit with better details.

>>

>>
>>15081444
I just finished putting that together and painting it and am still WTFing over the parts they expect you to cover with stickers. Like you expect the eyes and sensors and a couple details here and there, but this thing is fucking ridiculous.

That white piece on the assplate/shield/scissors? That's not a fucking white piece. That's a BLACK PIECE that you COVER ENTIRELY with a white sticker.
The tops of the large backpack pieces over the shoulders? Those are part of the tan plastic that you cover with bigass stickers.
The black around the wrists are stickers, and so are the whites on the elbows and wrist.
The Sight Mode alternate head is almost ALL stickers, it's just tan plastic with the two white parts on the temples of the head being the only white plastic.
Even the fucking brown on the heels is stickers.
And then after all that bullshit they don't even include stickers at all for the orange on the chest and knee vents. They're not even cut out with pieces showing through like they do with the Barbatos, they're just molded right in to tan on the knees and chest.

Yeah I know it's stupid to expect a high degree of color separation from HGs, but what they did with this kit is inexcusable. The black piece that you cover entirely with a white sticker is just unbelievable.

You HAVE TO paint this kit to make it look even remotely decent, there's no two ways about it.
>>
>>15083374
>You HAVE TO paint this kit to make it look even remotely decent
Yes that's gunpla
>>
>>15083440
Not to the degree I'm talking about. A lot of kits you can get away with some detailing and panel lines and it'll be passable, more work makes them even better. Gusion needs that "more" level of work just to look passable.

You need to use progressive sanding to remove the scratches, start by removing the nub with like a 600, then 1200 and 2000 to even it up. After that you can either use a higher grit or use a buffing block to make it smooth.
