He really isn't a self insert. And I'd argue that Mikazuki has selective empathy, but isn't incapable of it. He isn't obsessed with control in any way and isn't really manipulative, he's more of a psychopath, just like most of the guys in Teiwaz probably have to be.

I find Mikazuki shitty as a character but I will say his character makes sense. The orphan boys all have their differences in their morals but have some similarities, and Mikazuki is just one extreme, on the opposite end of Takaki. It makes sense that someone who the world discarded and never really cared about wouldn't care much about the world, or people outside of his immediate circle. He has survivalist mentality mixed with psychopathic tendencies to the max, and I don't find it confusing or even bad. In fact, I think they don't do enough with it in the narrative since you barely get people reacting to him as they should. If anything, more of Tekkadan should show crazy tendencies with the situation they were raised in. We saw in the beginning they were all willing to coup their superiors, and fine with murdering them, but they still had different thoughts on how to deal with the situation. Eugene was cautious, paranoid, wanted to give the princess up in exchange for money, and was pissed Orga gave the CGS dudes severance pay, while Shino was gawking at his behavior and wasn't okay with that. Akihiro didn't give a fuck either way because to human debris not much made a difference. Biscuit did what he had to but became quickly concerned when Tekkadan seemed like their business would never be over, that they would keep finding reasons to fight or be in dangerous situations. All of these are traits that could have made for great in group conflict, but it amounted to nothing as bullshit was focused on instead.

In practice he ends up looking like a Messiah because he's never experience setbacks or challenges to his characters, and there's no real conflict between characters sharing the same screen space (rip Biscuit, you did your best trying to carry this shitshow in S1)

Of course, with the benefit of hindsight, one could argue that he actually saved Chryse at the expense of the agricultural plant. If he hadn't taken that potshot, the ambush would have taken place at the original planned location and they wouldn't have found out about the problem with the Safe Mode until they attacked Hashmal. Mika initially didn't figure out why Barbatos "stopped listening" so he probably wouldn't have thought to turn off the limiter which is how he eventually beat Hashmal. Without Iok's bumbling, they might have lost Gusion and Barbatos and been unable to stop Hashmal from destroying Chryse.

Orga knew that he didn't know what he was looking at, so he called McGillis. McGillis knew what it was and warned them not to fuck with it, told them what it was, and told them not to bring MS around it. After it was awakened, they reasoned out what it would most likely do, checked its most likely path of travel, selected an ambush point, and had a reasonably well thought-out plan for ambushing it. Everyone was communicating and working together: Tekkadan, Turbines, and Gjallarhorn.

The fact that the Safe Mode kicked in can't really be held against Tekkadan, they had no way of knowing that would happen. Even McGillis apparently didn't know about that and he's the Calamity War history buff.

Iok, on the other hand, made no attempt to involve himself in the organized joint effort. He had his own plan which consisted of nothing more than "Imma shoot it with this gun that I have"
