I think the design is fine, but not particularly good, so long as you ignore the transformation. And most Gundam transformations (and most robot plane transformations in general) are pretty poor anyway, so it isn't really anything new.

My favorite Okawara design is probably Kakuseijin. He can do pretty cool stuff if he isn't bound by the precedent set by stuff he did in the 80s.

How do I begin designing my own mech?

I haven't come across any worthwhile books on the subject.

I'd be 3D-modeling them for renders just for shits and giggles but I don't know where to begin in terms of design.

I've done a few test ones where I've just stolen designs from existing mechs but that sort of defeats the point of being original.
