Looking at the anime redesign clearly for the first time, it really is shitty compared the original design, the proportions are just horrible. I don't know how to put it, but the anime version looks like it's trying too hard to be notGundam, while the original is a menacing super robot.

Why'd they even redesign it? I mean didn't the anime use 3d for the Machina, so it's not like they had to simplify it (in fact the original actually looks simpler, especially the color scheme.)

It can. That big thing on the back splits into five different thrusters that allow it to fly, and also holds its Executor beam blade. It also has some degree of gravity control that a few of them seem to have - that's how the original Decieve can fly amongst other things.

The principle is the same, But none of those form a "blade" in the traditional sense, just a large continuous beam swung like a blade. As for reach, it's the same question as to how far do missed beam shots travel, but we never do see Linbarrel have range issues with the Executor.

3D renders take a lot of time and budget. The manga version of the design is probably almost as complex to model as a Bayformer. Imagine all the moving parts. No way in hell would they have the budget for something like that, especially considering how old this show was relative to the CG technology of the time.

Honestly I think the original design wouldn't look pleasing in motion as a 3d model. Especially next to environment assets that wouldn't have a level of detail that would match, worsening the already prominent level of conspicuosness that dominates CGI animation.

There's an entire chunk of anime production centered on taking preproduction material and adapting them to a moving form, and I feel Gonzo spent time looking at the original Linebarrel and deciding, perhaps with a dash of the usual Gonzo need to fuck with stuff for the sake of it, that the design should be streamlined to fit a visual standard.

But that's just my speculation.

As with all things classic Gonzo, it's Gonzo; those fuckers were insane.
