Which Mechanical Monster would win in a fight?
>>
TimberWolf is one of my fave designs of all time, but Rex is nucular-equipped.

Without the nuke it's probably a coin toss between who lands the most LRM's or railgun hits first.

It's not even a contest.
Battletech is based around very, very shitty tech.
Like, their best range is something less than 2 km and most weapons can't hit shit past 500 m.

It's a Mad Max-ian setting of really crappy tech.

Meanwhile, REX is said to be able to launch a nuke from anywhere in the world to hit any place in the world.
It's also smaller in height, uses a stealthy design and has a top speed of 140km/h.

They're both cool but that's really not even contest worthy.
>>
>>15067903
I recall Batletech creators joking that at the end some numbers don't make much sense, like you could probably throw farther than range of some weapons. But it works in the framework of the tabletop game, so it's not that big of an issue.
>>
>>15067887
Timberwolf, no contest.
>>
>>15067919
Pretty much.

It's generally the setting's main appeal.
>>
>>15067919
Yes, they openly admit that if they were to implement realistic weapon ranges, you would need something approaching the size of a tennis court to play the game properly, and even more space if you brought dedicated artillery pieces. It's a limitation of tabletop wargames in general, not something exclusive to Battletech.

That said, this is a terrible matchup since they're designed for completely different things. The Timber Wolf is a general combatant while REX is a strategic weapon. Both of them are going to handily beat the other in their respective spheres of influence, though using REX's nuclear railgun on one Battlemech is akin to trying to kill a housefly with your car.
>>
>>15067985
>though using REX's nuclear railgun on one Battlemech is akin to trying to kill a housefly with your car.

It always has those AT missiles with an operational range of 8 km. Assuming these are unusable (for some tech reasons), there's always a 100MW laser.

That's completely out of BTech's ballpark.
Ever seen those fancy Navy railguns?
Their tests are trying to approach 30MJ (one second of that laser hitting you is 100MJ of power) and the tests shown on video are nowhere near close despite it being much more powerful than a gauss rifle (which is one of the strongest weapons in BTech).

So it's harder to hit, faster and much more deadly at all ranges.
There is no setting where a REX wouldn't rip Mad Cat a new asshole.

>Meanwhile, REX has been defeated by a lonely guy running up to its face and shooting it with Stingers multiple times. It was unable to disengage from the confrontation.

It can lob nukes really far, but really, that's about it. If it has the support (either in human spotters or sattelite spotters), it can tag the Timber wolf with one of those. Otherwise it'll get rolfstomped really hard.

To be fare, that guy is a genetic clone of the greatest soldier to have ever lived. To say the Rex is worthless because SOLID FUCKING SNAKE beat it is like saying cars are useless cause Usain Bolt can run 55mph.

Mad Cat wouldn't fare any better because it's fucking Solid Snake.
The only way he lived was because the thing was confined in an enclosed environment (absolutely no movement options) and couldn't hit him for shit.

Which is exactly what happens to Mad Cats all the time and Elementals are wussies compared to Solid.
>>
Somebody should probably mention the absolutely fucking insane levels of ECM and ECCM carried by bog standard Battlemechs. Rex has almost nothing by comparison and would just shut down because all the circuit boards melted.
>>
REX beat RAY.

In RL-terms, the Timber Wolf A has four autocannons for anti-infantry duty. They can basically fill the general space infantry is located in with shrapnels and call it a day. This isn't something you survive by being a really well-trained clone.

Also ECM and radar. All that radiation is going to make itself felt quickly, especially if you're right in front of it.
>>
>>15068608
In RL-terms, if something targets you with a double GAU, every metric centiemeter of the room is filled with lead in a few seconds.
Shrapnels would be a bitch as well, given he's firing a crap-ton of missiles at snake... the pressure blast would be enough to kill the poor guy.

Real life terms are not exactly applicable to fictional scenarios and I've fucked up my share of Mad Cats with an Elemental squad.

>>15068497
Well, the problem here is that Mad Cat never used any ECM in any configuration.
>>
>>15068654
Eh, in BT-mechanics, the Rex would've fucked him up good. He stands a fighting chance because the world is his to begin with.
>>
>>15067985
You could load REX's railgun with something else. It was meant for shooting down nukes before FOXHOUND took over.
>>
>>15068654
TIMBERWOLF would wreck Rex.
>>
>>15068699
That would be just savage.
I mean, it has global range... the thing could shoot a pear and leave a Hiroshima-sized crater wherever it landed with the kind of energy it produces.
>>
Mechwarrior tech is a thousand years into the future, the Timberwolf would smoke the fuck out of Rex.

Timberwolf
>LRMs
>Large/Medium Lasers
>Machine guns
>Solid as fuck armour plating

Rex
>Railgun
>Machine guns
>Laser

The railgun is meant as a strategic strike weapon not meant for combat.

Fixed that for you, honey.

Timberwolf

>Large/Medium Lasers
>Machine guns

Rex
>Much longer range missiles
>Gargantuan laser
>Heavy machine guns
>>
>>15068880
>Rex
>Gargantuan laser

But it was small enough to fight against infantry, won't that make it a BT small laser?
>>
>>15068892
I was following BTech naming schemes.
That laser has a power output of about 1/5th of a nuclear power plant.
There's a pretty ridiculous disconnect between how it was presented in the game and how that kind of beast would work in reality.

A Battletech turn is 60 seconds and a CERLL does 10 damage in that amount of time so it goes through a half-ton of armour.
That's about 104 MJ of energy.
Metal Gear's nets you 6000MJ in the same time.
Basically some 55 CERLL combined into one laser.
>>
>>15068924
What is powering that thing?
It used that laser many times during the fight.
>>
>>15068932
>What is powering that thing?

What is powering all giant robots in existence? Magic with a fancy name, 'ArmsTech AGM 4000 "Behemoth"'.
>>
>>15068939
That's a good name.
>>
>>15068924
>Metal Gear's nets you 6000MJ in the same time.

HAHA time for NAVAL LASERS
>>
>>15068742
>>15068699
battletech do have gauss canon, it's the mech version of a sniper rifle.
>>
>>15068924
Good thing that everything not animated in video games is made of the hardest metall known to man.

That sounds like fun.

That goes without saying. That's like asking "Who is a better swordsman, Guts or Kenshin Himura?" Then answering Future Trunks.
