There are solid original mech shows. You just named three of them. Those don't help people get in to a genre, they just help people get in to a particular show. In the West, "mecha" is a genre generally associated with Transformers and Power Rangers, basically cheesy half hour toy commercials. No matter how "dark" or "mature" a mecha show actually is, Westerners are inevitably going to associate big robots with that.

The most well-known strictly mecha thing outside of Transformers (specifically Bayformers nowadays) in the US is probably Gundam Wing, which pretty much perfectly explains their attitude.
