Sidonia was a huge letdown for me. The beginning third or so was really interesting with a lot of cool concepts and ideas... then it turned into "harem shenanigans in space" and the ending felt rushed and shoehorned. I don't know if it was because Nihei got bored with it or what, but the manga quickly falls apart and kind of putters along after Hoshijiro dies. I still love all the designs and concepts that were introduced (which all help to give the series an eerie, uncomfortable atmosphere), but as a whole Sidonia was 15 volumes of wasted potential.

The anime just isn't worth talking about outside of the OPs and EDs.

Honestly I found the ending to be so disappointing that it ended up being hilarious.

Anybody know what he's working on now? I saw he did some one shot set in a post ecological disaster earth or such, but nothing about another long term work.

That's kind of how it goes with most things he writes. Rad ideas and an engaging story that starts to dawdle at some point. Goes nowhere for an extended period of time, cool ideas become more complicated/obtuse, then a very sudden and very unfulfilling ending with little to nothing ever explained.

He's good at sowing the seeds for a story but not good on capitalizing on anything he sets up.

Biomega kinda went exactly like Sidonia. Abara's saving grace was being short and making so little sense that it became endearing.

I hated this as well. I'm glad the anime didn't lay it on as thick with the harem shit as the manga. Where the anime ended, the manga really picked up the harem antics.
