I was given the impression that the Gouf was supposed to be a commander's suit leading a duo or trio of Zaku Js. Hence why they all come with a Commander's Horn standard. And the Dom is a fast attack heavy assault unit. More of a spec op suit then the general purpose Zaku. All three serve a similar, yet unique and different purpose.

That Gouf is blue because Ramba Ral's color of choice is blue, he is known as the Blue Giant. Similar to Char's color of choice with red and being nicknamed the Red Comet for its 3 times faster speed. In the Origin he pilots a blue mobile worker as well.

That's the point.

The Gouf was a failure, you see. It was created using similar "philosophies", you could say, to the Zaku, and as such it was not good enough as a ground combat machine to make up for what the Zaku lacked in mobility on Earth.

The Dom rectified this- it was made by another company using a wholly new design concept that completely removed the mobility problems both the Zaku and Gouf were unable to fully cope with.
