So what exactly was up with this release?

Why was it dub only?
Why did it stop using the Japanese intro and outro partway through?
Why was Kukurus Doan's Island omitted and has continued to be despite being on the Japanese DVD release?

>Why was it dub only?
no R2 dvds at the time of the series and japs fear reverse importation like twenty godzillas
>Why was Kukurus Doan's Island omitted and has continued to be despite being on the Japanese DVD release?
Tomino said so. Same reason they're Black Tri Stars and Cyber Newtypes. Nobody ruins a US Gundam release like the bald wizard
>>
>Why was it dub only?

At the time there was not a proper Japanese DVD release of the series, and Bandai wanted to create their own Japanse only DVD set which costs 5x the amount of US DVD releases.

Pure greed.

>Why was it dub only?
There were a couple of reasons I've heard. Some or all of them could be true.
- The reverse import thing as already mentioned.
- The audio tracks of the original were not well kept and a lot of costly digital touchup work would be required to fix it up.

>Why did it stop using the Japanese intro and outro partway through?
This is all related to the absolutely retarded licensing agreement for Gundam:
Bandai Japan and Sunrise demanded that original Gundam be shown in a mid-afternoon timeslot (mind you, this is the timeslot it failed during its original airing in Japan). If this wasn't done, Bandai Entertainment and Cartoon Network wouldn't have access to other titles like Gundam Wing.

As expected, the dated graphics and overarching war story didn't go as well. To make matters worse, it was marketed as a regular show rather than a "Classic that started it all". In an attempt to make the show more interesting, the opening and ending were changed.

>Why was Kukurus Doan's Island omitted and has continued to be despite being on the Japanese DVD release?
Once again, there were a couple of reasons I've heard. Some or all of them could be true.
- Someone on the Japan side said no.
- The original video for that episode was degraded and would require digital touchup that was too expensive.
- The animation quality of that episode was low.

answers are already covered in various interviews with either former members of staff for Bandai Entainment, Sunrise, or Righstuf. There is no speculation answers. So cut the crap answers out of your head

>Why was it dub only?
Dub only because Japan wanted to make sure it wasn't reverse imported.

>Why did it stop using the Japanese intro and outro partway through?

There is no answer for this. No one has ever asked Bandai or Sunrise this question, that's why there's no answer. None of your answers are related to the question because it's the OP/ED song he's asking about.

>Why was Kukurus Doan's Island omitted and has continued to be despite being on the Japanese DVD release?

The answer on the latest Rightstuff interview has remained the same: "Because Tomino said so". The reasoning Tomino has for that is never explained nor does he answer.

During its stateside release no R2 DVDs existed. Japan was extremely worried about reverse importation and demanded it be dub only. (They eventually allowed Bandai to release it with the original Japanese right before Bandai USA went under. After Japan got its original DVD sets.)

Also, the masters for 0079 Gundam, while preserved, required a MASSIVE amount of clean up and digital restoration. To the point that the original 16mm masters were effectively lost and they had to work some crazy magic with the 35mm blowup copies they had. Also, the master audio tracks were thought lost for a very long time until they were discovered in an old warehouse in late '99.

The masters Bandai USA got were the old Laserdisc ones. This is what they used for the dubbing process and the source that the R1 DVDs of the time used. It's workable but when the show was finally restored it took some finagling to get the dub to sync up properly.

Doan's island is supposedly removed because of direct request from Tomino due to the terrible animation and sub-par story. (and thus was never dubbed) However, with the release of the Japanese DVD's and Blus, it's starting to look like it was just another way to try and prevent reverse importation.

I'm actually kinda amazed Japan hasn't had some sort of major documentary chronicle just how extensive and time consuming the restoration process was.

This was always speculation but never made sense because it was included on all JP releases.

>Doan's island is supposedly removed because of direct request from Tomino

This is the only thing that's true. A reason is never given.

Hence that "Doan's island is supposedly removed" bit.

Reading comprehension on /m/ these days.
