I am really enjoying IBO almost for the sound design alone. The lack of beam weapons has really had a huge impact for me. The way damage works and more importantly sounds during combat is just so refreshing and satisfying. All of the clanging and bashing and denting compared to the usual just laser slicing and instant KO explosions is really enjoyable.

Even the sounds that Hashmal makes were really unique and cool. Just the audio from Mikazuki and the Mobile Armor's battle was so exciting. The otherworldly screeching of the AI, the whistling of the fast movements and the meaty clangs of the impacts. I wish the story were being handled more effectively but this is the most satisfying AU for me.

The only MS with more then one reactor so far have been Gundam I'm pretty sure, the Rather Unique System is probably part of the reason a third reactor could be added.

I feel very strongly that Vidar (the character and the ms) are a combination between Gali and Ein. Between Galis Gundam and Eins Graze there would be more then enough parts to build Vidar and Vidar has that edge to him that's eclipsed only by Murdered Out Ein.

We won't know how any of them survived or how Vidar came to be until Vidars end game is revealed

I totally agree to the sentiment of all of this (And nearly dropped IBO over it), but my... I guess motivation to keep going, is that I'm kind of ignoring Mika as the protagonist? Like I feel IBO does SUCH a good job with the other characters that I'm allowed to focus on them while perceiving him as a tool of Tekkaden and Orga.

Most of the events have been schemes between Rustal and McGillis and their confrontation really reached a climax.

Graze Ritter manual mentions that the Ritter was built with form over function in mind and was mostly only intended for ceremonial duties like being an honor guard. Basically it was a graze with a few parts swapped out to make it look fancier. The official page for McGillis's graze ritter on the website also mentions that McGillis had it's performance comprehensively reviewed and that especially the ground combat programming was redone.

Also oddly enough the official site doesn't have a page for the standard or Carta's graze ritter back in season 1.

The idea seems to be that there's a substance called 'nanolaminate' that's available as a paint in various colors. It's slathered on suits and ships and the more Ahab Waves their reactor is putting out (apparently more as ambient radiation rather than direct internal conduits like in GN Composite armor), the more resilient the laminate gets. It can shrug off just about anything, but sustained abuse will wear it down.

In most cases that's physical melee weapons. McGillis noted a thin patch on Barbatos's back during its first space battle and shot at it, which rattled Mika around a bit. While on the bridge of the Isaribi, Biscuit makes a one-off line about the napalm missiles the Turbines' Hammerhead was shooting at them at the time, saying that if they kept being hit by that 'even the nanolaminate would melt'. Some people took the latter to mean it's weak against napalm, but if that was the case every suit would be chucking napalm grenades at each other - I think he was just losing his shit and worried that they'd get roasted, such that 'even the nanolaminate' (which is crazy strong) would ultimately fail.

And then there's some rumour shit about the reason Ryusei-go was pink was because they had both red and white nanolaminate, but not enough of either to do the job, so they mixed the two to get enough to cover the suit. But that kind of ignores that Shino's mobile worker in Ep 1 was pink, just like Mika's was white and Akihiro's was pastel blue.

Higher reactor output means a stronger mech with more reactive movement. You can also forgo the improved agility to mount more armor since the frame can still move acceptable thanks to the stronger servos, and mount more energy demanding systems, like advanced sensors. You can also wield heavier weapons that produce more recoil, larger thrusters, more fuel for those thruster, and rip enemy mechs apart in good old hand servo to hand servo combat, with all the power the frame now has at its disposal.

There's really not much reason to not pump out as much power as the system will safely allow from a design standpoint.

A good way to show a subtle difference that actually makes a rather big difference in presentation is comparing the first arc in 0079 and IBO. This is the basic arc where the main cast, premise and Gundam are presented to the viewers.

This creates tension for the viewer, because we know that Amuro isn't some unbeatable punk, and we get to see the consequences of Amuro's failures, and we get a reason to root for Amuro (we want him to gitgud).

In IBO, there's were some stakes (Mika your friends will die), but Mika protects them successfully (so as long as the Gundam is around nothing bad can happen. A theme that gets reinforced later on as well in the show); Mika's actions leads to a direct improvement of their quality of life (so Mika piloting the Gundam leads to their problems solving themselves); the Barbatos isn't show having any weaknesses (it shitstomps the opponent and Mika is clearly the better pilot); and finally the sense of threat is removed (opponent down, now on to the next challenge). Tension is effectively killed.

The 0079 "destroyed home colony" is becoming a bit of a cliché by now, but there's a good reason why it became a cliché. It fucking works.

It seems that in this sense, the AV system and the plot point dealing with limiting it's effectiveness served more to bite the story in the ass rather than serve as a vehicle for it. Perhaps the gundams' AV systems should have taken more of a toll more regularly, stopping short of maiming him with the limiters still on. Temporary neurological effects could have served this purpose well.

You'll notice that Tomino always tried to avoid giving "temporary" power ups. Sure, the SEED mode was cool and all, but it has the downside of trivializing every non-SEED fight (because y'know, if he ain't SEED:ing it means he's not trying his hardest->the fight isn't that dangerous->we haven't gotten our go sign to get excited yet).

I suspect Tomino understood this, and therefore always give his MC:s permanent power-ups that works all the time and is used all the time. A new gundam model usually.

The AV system now is sort of the same. If the pilots aren't crippling themselves it means they still got a few inches to go, so why bother getting hyped?

This is a minor thing though, but there's a lot of minor things in IBO that stacks up to deflate the excitement in fight scenes (the biggest one in my opinion is probably that nothing bad happens once the Gundam joins the fray. This turns the Gundam into a safety blanket for the viewer).
