Secondary characters like Gyanko and Simon seem like they would be better main characters than the actual main characters because they don't have as much screentime, so people can imagine what they would be like as leads and compare that to the disappointing reality.

The fact is that Simon and Gyanko as main characters would be just as boring and flat as the actual main characters we got, because the problem wasn't with the archetypes. That was always the issue he started off as an obnoxious kid who got spoonfed a model people would literally kill for then spent the rest of the series spamming the same move and being obnoxious. the fact everyone just bent over backwards for him and how half the time he WASNT onscreen you almost had "where's Poochie" constantly.

GBF had lots of episodes and moments where Reiji had to learn the ins and outs of the series and hobby proper and Sei was just a much a focus as he was, maybe more so and he was a fanatic gundam nerd

just finished rewatching S1 Build Fighters. the parts i remember hating like RG build knuckle spam aren't nearly as bad as i remember them. the only fight it was really upsetting in was Star Build Strike vs Gundam X Maoh, because it's complete bullshit that a double satellite cannon sword would lose to pretty much anything head on.
I still love that Edgy Meijin Kawaguchi raided Setsuna's closet for a scarf before the finals.
