Western superhero shows and adaptations are bad about assuming that the aesthetics and style of something has to be super dark in order to sell darker themes, and generally be taken seriously. I love this episode a lot. Kiriya's final moment being that he told the truth, even though it got him killed was pretty nice. It really showed that he changed in a big way.

It is also nice to see this kind of episode so early and on christmas nonetheless.

Honestly the only thing that irks me in this show is Emu's random tripping. It's not funny and he never shows that trait anywhere else where it would actually matter, like in a fight.
Otherwise it's great like Drive, and the TATAKAE is much better than Ryuki and Gaim and it doesn't have bullshit like Faiz yet.

Understandable, Kiriya's trying to distance himself from the others as he looks into the various mysteries of the show. So of course he doesn't want to be buddies with the others immediately.

He starts trying to fix that, but obviously gets murdered before he can fully come clean and earn their full trust. Even Kiriya admits that he got in over his head this time.

The problem is, and I get it, it's tv, characters wont act like real people, but when he fought Genm to expose his identity and it turned out wrong, and everyone automatically assumed he was just lying, anyone with a logical brain would piece one and one together and realize either he was wrong, or Genm's pulling a fast one. No one tells a lie with confidence, rushes in to fight and personally expose his lie as a lie, not even the most idiotic fibber actively works to prove himself a liar. So the others should have realized that it wasn't a lie, and something went wrong, not "Oh, he just exposed the very thing he told us two minutes ago as wrong, he must be trying to ruse us again, what a cunt"

The main thing that drove that was that Kiriya himself realized that he got played by the villains, and that trying to defend himself was not going to go over well considering his track record. So faced with that, and knowing that he'd be undermined by Dan at every turn, he just took the easier path of continuing to drive the other Riders away by pretending he had intended to deceive them all along.

This also keeps them from getting too close to him as he keeps trying to dig up the truth on his own, both on Dan and GENM Corp, and then later on with Emu's history and Dr. Kyotaro. Kiriya isn't happy about this turn of events, but considering his hangups about honesty, he's convinced that it's for the best that he works alone.

At this point he assumes that everyone is either trying to play him, or is being manipulated by the villains. So he thinks honesty will get him nowhere, and may make things worse.

Well I get all that, my issues is just how easily everyone believed he was lying, when the context of the situation would mean Kiriya is a braindead moron to actually be telling a lie, rather than just being wrong or being tricked.

Not to mention, I feel the major issue is that everything has moved a bit too fast, at least in my opinion. It's been 12 episodes, and it feels like they were trying to delve into character arcs that could have been expanded across half or the whole series, and then tie up said character arcs and developments as fast as possible. I mean, I never felt attached to Kiriya, and his supposed inner turmoils concerning trusting the others and also lying for himself just never felt explained, or properly fleshed out, none of it's really been given time to soak in and be absorbed before it's thrown away.

Baron was pretty much set up as the final boss and they made a bug deal about how his views were incompatible with Kouta and one of them had to die.

Chase got killed during the finale arc when we're expecting there to be big stakes and impactful deaths.

This is 12 episodes in, a character that the writers obviously worked at to make likeable and sympathetic, and was billed as a major Rider equal to the other Secondaries. Toei knew damn well what they were getting into.

It was okay early on when it was awkward Japanese moments and lame ojisan jokes, just short humor breaks in otherwise serious shows. But they kept introducing more and more forced humor to appease the kids. By Blade it was wtf weird and in Kabuto it was an absolute mess with more than half cast being reduced to comic relief roles late in the show.

That's why Den-O's particularly important because it was able to create a formula balancing humorous and serious tones.
