The nier/drakengard games are all very losely related. They take place in the same general universe, but with large spans of time in between, or even in alternate timelines from each other.

Automata takes place something like eight thousand years after Ending D of Nier.

Even Yoko Taro has said people who have never played the other games will still be able play and enjoy automata. However, you won't understand the setting quiet as well. And there is a large possibility that a few characters from Nier have been able to survive all this time and may show up. I don't want to say more than that.
